Red Bull RB20

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Seems like they are indeed vertical inlets, Tobi Gruner has a pic showing them as well

The whole floor edge looks like a dummy, with the long straight side panel, so I don't trust the vertical inlets or the entire sidepods yet to be honest.

Why are you people saying that the vertical inlet is a mercedes thing? Vertical or horizontal is the smallest part of the work mercedes did which involved moving radiators and shaping the chassis to accomodate having small sidepods.

RB20 looks to have the same amount of sidepods. Fundamentally the car philosophy looks unchanged. Vertical or horizontal inlet is just a detail imho, the inlet itself is just a pipe.

if you scroll down you can see an animation without intakes like on the pictures here and if you scroll down a bit more you can see W15 style intakes on the sidepods

Pretty sure the W15 inlets you're talking about are just bargeboards or whatever they're called in this gen of F1 cars.

The 3D model has some funky reflections under the lip, making me think it's a shark's mouth.

If you play with the 360 degree view, you can see that there is no vertical inlet, just a small step and structural change in the monocoque.
And you can see the air inlets exactly where they make sense: on the front of the side pods, narrow and high up.
So, no W15 style visible.

I don't think Newey should call this "conservative".

I guess someone on reddit managed to grab the model itself to play around with and it indeed looks like a shark mouth.
