Alpine A524

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Actually you can see the exhaust pipe plunging directly towards the engine here (top left), while it went upwards in '22... so yes the '24 pipe must be straighter to reduce losses & maximize power, & it must pass below the modified & more forward suspension assembly* (blue)...

This ties in with Harmann's comment about minimizing the cooling of the exhaust piping.

It ties more with his quote "we integrated the tail pipe into the suspension carrier around the transmission, basically to straighten it, to reduce the pressure drop across it..."

Cooling the tail pipe has no bad effect AFAIK. He was rather talking about the 3 pipe manifolds in the sidepods that feed the turbine. Cooling those (or overcooling them :?: *) is definitely bad for engine perf.

The bottom two images have the exhaust placed exactly central to engine crankshaft location, clutch and gearbox primary shafts always exist in that position.

I don't think that extrapolation can be relied upon to show anything tangible.

It's a quick and exaggerated sketch to underline the differences, so it's not meant to be precise.
But it's not that wrong. Look at those gearbox casings that house the turbine or even a full turbo, and you'll see that the exit pipe is millimeters away from the shafts, clutch, suspensions etc
And look at the Mclaren and especially RB casing and pipe...

They look like McLaren L shaped2011 sidepods, albeit inverted and mixed with a RB19 style letterbox.
Was just about to say that, they do, perhaps Mac`s sidepods from then would work now?

AMuS says "The new chassis & gearbox are cut in a V-shape at the bottom, the monocoque is longer, & the gbox is shorter"
I dont know what they mean for the monocoque "V", but regarding the gbox, maybe they mean Alpine narrowed it down like some recent Ferrari & RB gbox casings...

It seems Alpine raised that section of the monocoque and fuel tank area, where the fuel hatch is, indicated by the arrows and red color.
So if Alpine made that part fatter, then the monocoque must have become slimmer elsewhere.

Is this one Alpine ? It looks like Ferrari installation....impressive non the less and illustrative of just how tightly packed the suspension is in there.
