McLaren MCL38

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Another shot. Judging from the wet tyres, lack of sponsors visible and background it’s probably from silverstone.

It's the MCL36 I believe, Team did a few warm up days for the drivers at Barcelona
I think you might be right with that one. I’ll leave the post up just in case it isn’t the 36.

Only thing I thought we could take is that it looked pretty stable (low amount of porpoising) and that for the most part, looked like the driver was nicely in control.

Can’t tell what pace they’re going at though so as always, we’ll see a bit more of a picture in testing but the true picture in quali!

What do you think the toggle switch that is engaged at 1:13 is?

McLaren used their filming day (200km) at Silverstone. Maybe they used their shakedown (15km) today
Two shooting days are allowed. The total distance is 400 km.
According to Formu1aUno, Mclaren have used up their 400km total distance today - https://formu1a.uno/mclaren-e-haas-hann ... lming-day/
Are they sure about this? That would mean that the team has completed 74 laps around Bahrain, which would not be a bad start to testing (yes, I am aware that filming days come with different specification of tires, that you are not allowed to do aerowork etc.)

Half that. 200 kilometers were supposedly used during the silverstone filming day

and this

"And McLaren now also has a rear axle that works with specially arranged torsion bars instead of disc springs."
Like all cars, the MCL38 has also had a programme of weight reduction, according to Stella.

According to RB weight loss was the biggest differentiator from the RB18 to RB19.

That toggle switch is usually a programmed setting that should be a combination of several setting changes like a brake bias and differential change...it was used before turn 10 so it probably sent the brake bias rearwards etc..etc....

Can't really get much from the video..car is probably bolted with filming equipment + demo tyres... only difference I can really tell compared to last shakedown video is the car is bottoming a lot less in notable spots on the track.

Are they allowed to bundle together settings in that way? I thought Alpine got in trouble for it with "automated" brake bias settings a few years ago?

Yes they are. There are differences with the Alpine system of old. With this system it is just preloaded settings that are changed when the switch position is changed. The action is still initiated by the driver. IIRC the alpine system had some element of being automatic where the settings would change on their own based on where you are on the lap.

McLaren dropped a short video before the test - footage probably from the shakedown.
