Red Bull RB20

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Apparently Newey was inspired by Ferrari.
I wouldn't read into that. The engine cover is clearly W14 inspired

Yes, of course. The shape of the HALO is very similar.
What I meant are the bathtubs with the outlets.
It's basically identical to what Ferrari had on the sidepods, just one floor higher.
But that’s not meant to be derogatory at all, quite the opposite!
It is something Newey has always excelled at.
Adapting good ideas and integrating them into his own unique concepts.

W14 has the high shoulders and also for the same aerodynamic purpose. Not to mention they ran louvres there as well like RB. Bathtub sidepods.. completely different form, purpose etc

I’m not marking/mocking this up but what IF.

You directed the vertical cooling ducts, halo, roll hoops into “one” big internal cooling/exhaust plenum and then had the S-Ducts trigger a mechanism to exhaust gases out the side (over side pods) or down the shark fin valley exists based on speed/yaw?

Cooling Exhaust (switch)?

Airflow over side pods to floor or out the back to interact with beam wing DRS?

We can already see the entire ducting of the halo inlets

And it's very likely they're using the vertical inlets to cool electronics

You're right, I remembered the shape of the Mercedes incorrectly. My bad.

As understood by Formu1a.uno , we will never see a real zeropods concept on the RB20 , although in cooler races the bodywork could be even more aggressive.

I've lost track... just how many air inlets and outlets does the RB20 have ?

Air Inlets :
1. Roll-hoop middle
2. Roll-hoop sides x 2
3. Sidepod horizontal letterbox inlets x 2
4. vertical slits on the chassis side, under overbite 'eagle-beak' of sidepods x 2 (or x 4 ? )
5. engine cover elephant trunk x 2
6. Nose top driver cooling ducts x 2

Air Outlets :
1. Sidepod rear bottom outlet (blowing into coke bottle area) x 2
2. Engine cover sidefacing triple/quadruple louvres x 2
3. Engine cover skyfacing bathtub channel louvres x 2
4. Engine cover rear conventional big outlet

what else am I missing ?

It's super cool to see the effect the high pressure zone in front of the inlet has on the airflow coming off the front suspension

Seems the gullies have not only the louvres but a large outlet there as well. Markup not by me

Did the car run on track like this?

I was wondering if they could use the Ferrari bathtub solution there. They might have deemed it too complicated for the little if any benefit it provided.

Re: Red Bull RB20

There are several ways to get a car quick around a track and teams make different choices weighing straightline speed, downforce, tire usage etc.

It is reported that RB is focussing on low drag.

Might that be in preparation of the '26 ruleset? The rules are not to be changed significantly and low drag becomes paramount when they go 50% Electric. Might be a smart move!

if proven to be beneficial in performance, we could see more cars adopting.
Wonder how difficult it will be to teams to switch to multiple cooling duct system
