How were they able to deduce MB race pace?

Alonso said it himself above. "Q3 will be expensive", and Mercedes is reportedly level with Ferrari.

We will see, but AM do not seem confident right now unless this is the almightiest bluff from Alonso
More than what Alonso says you have to look at his body language. For example in 2023 he was also being cautious in his public statements and saying difficult races at the start because he had to get used to the car etc... but every time he spoke there was a smile on his face that he couldn't hide despite him trying. This time from what we have seen is that his body language is poor and other journalists have also commented on that fact...
Interesting, so I have to apologize for misquoting Alonso. He didn't say the "Q3 is expensive" part. That looks like journalist spin.

Maybe it's not as bad as it looks but I trust you've seen a Alonso over the years. Sad if true.
Well yes but it's just an opinion still. I'm going to aim a bit low so in case it's not that bad next week then you have a better feeling.

Krack and De la Rosa are now doing what looks like an upgrade talk, we have bad memories from last year but hopefully it is different.

Krack: "We are very conscious that there are 24 races and the development race is already underway. It won't just start next week so we have to keep it up. Last year we saw that we had to keep up the pace, and the team has put a great plan in place, and I'm confident that this year will be different.
There is a long season ahead and we have multiple projects in development, some of which are very promising.
Pedro: "I have the feeling that we all come here with high hopes, but you can't interpret these three days of pre-season as the final. This is a starting point and from Bahrain we will see where we are. This is a race of evolution and we are quite confident in our development. Last year helped us a lot to understand the car and in which direction the evolutions have to go."

Pretty difficult to deduce much from this. Alonso did similar times as Piastri on the same tire at the same session time. And also similar to Verstappen. But then you look at Hulkenberg, and he is going faster than all of them when his fuel load is getting down, in what has appeared to be the slowest car on the grid so far. #-o

F1s own predictions, not sure if these historically have been accurate but here they are

If that is the case, Stroll will struggle to make Q3.

6th best qualifying car according to F1. Behind VCARB. Ouch... I hope Aston has been running conservative engine modes/high fuel loads. [-o<

I'm quite a realist and I have to be honest. I really appreciated Alonso's statements. As bad as it is to think that Alonso won't win this year, it's better to know beforehand and not be disappointed later. So his brutal honesty is a good thing. As for those who say he will go to Mercedes, do you think it makes any difference to be second or third or fourth or whatever it is? Redbull has an advantage of half a second per lap over its closest pursuer, which is very sad for F1 considering that these regulations served to reduce the gap. Sad for F1.

Yes it matters. Fighting for 8th or 9th is different to fighting for 2nd and 3rd on the podium which is reportedly where Mercedes could be along with Ferrari.

If the tire-deg estimates are somewhat true they can hope for some advancements through the races at least.

I don't believe this, Piastri's run seemed to be with much more fuel. I expect to be 5th best team or close to RB, wished we would at least be 3rd best team, but as long as we are within 1-2 tenths of McLaren/Mercedes and close enough to Ferrari it's not a bad start, they just need to upgrade the car properly this year.
