I'll wait for Jeddah to see if the performance is similar in a different kind of track, but if so... do you think RB will consider postponing the R4 & R7 upgrade package?
Similarly how they postponed the Singapore update in 2022 and basically all end-of-season upgrades in 2023.
No I don't think so. The rb19 was upgraded at R4 even with the advantage they had at the beginning of last year which seems to be comparable to the rb20's

To me, the RB20 is what the RB18 was to the RB19. A very early stage of the concept.

It is. Clearly so. That it went this well this weekend already is a big deal.

Part of the fabric of F1 is that it isn’t a single-make formula, there are 10 teams out there trying to build the fastest possible car and they have a relatively open rulebook to do it.

While many other racing championships out there try to meddle, limit and control their participants, F1 does that to a much lesser extent and as a result you get to witness absolute greatness.

Make no mistake, that’s what we’re seeing from Red Bull - delivering another stonking car that is only going to get quicker - and to a greater extent, Verstappen.

Sure, F1 would be more interesting as a whole if there was a different winner every week. But if there was a different winner every week, you wouldn’t get to see the type of dominance in its purest and glorious form that makes people fall in love with said sports. Ali, Messi, Jordan, you get the idea. These people weren’t forced to wear weighted boots or compete with an arm behind their back. They were free.

That’s exactly what we’re seeing now. A free and spectacular Max Verstappen. For better or worse, this is a symptom of F1’s DNA.

Although I'd be against it, perhaps it's time to look at changing that DNA, because in a race where you got to witness one of F1's best-ever drivers deliver an absolute masterclass, the driver of the day was well over 20 seconds behind and didn't even have that spectacular a race.

People should embrace and appreciate the greatness unfolding in front of them instead of pushing back against it."

Honestly I don't think this is going to be a season like last year's unless the Japan and Imola upgrades give a huge jump on performance. Yes, Max has won quite comfortably but Mercedes and Ferrari had issues, Sainz suggested he also had brake problems although not extreme as Leclerc's.

Firstly, Max said they think there'll be tracks that they'll be weaker at unlike last year they said Monaco, Hungary and Singapore could be weak tracks to them. Adding to that, Max expects a closer competition in Jeddah. Helmut Marko expressed his surprise over the result, he wasn't expecting a win like this. Secondly, almost everyone was talking about how superior RB19 is on the testing last year and the famous Russell quote "Redbull are going to win every race" which many of us called BS at first. This year it seems more chill, yes RB20 has an advantage but it isn't as big as last year's.
Third thing, so far from the telemetry analysis some of you guys made recently shows RB20 is greater than RB19 in low speed corners but that it give or take matches RB19 in mid/high speed corners whereas Ferrari has stepped their game up in high speed corners. This could be a RB20 characteristic or just a Bahrain thing, but after Max has said he expects Jeddah will be closer suggests to me that RB20 may have a characteristic like this. Probably Jeddah is going to be a Ferrari pole and depending on how they treat the tires during the race, Ferrari can win.

My prediction is in this way, and a last thing that I said before, Japan and Imola upgrades are going to be focused on high speed performance imo

That's high praise, and well deserved. Max is the most consistent driver in all my years of watching F1.

Jeddah and Australia will naturally be closer. Field spread varies from track to track

I have the same thought. The RB20 is almost a revolution rather than an evolution of RB19 and so the car still packs full of development potential that can only make the car quicker as the season progresses.

This is a fantastic start for RBR, especially for Perez to finish a comfortable 2nd. Perhaps 2024 will be a drive to survive the season for Perez as I believe Carlos Sainz will be eyeing to be Max's teammate in 2025.

I think RB20 is designed to be highly adaptable and easily tweaked to adapt to different track conditions and requirements, RB20 may not necessarily be the quickest during qualifying throughout this season, but in race trim and tire management, RB20 could be untouchable.

RB said the same things last year, that they have weaknesses and it wont be like this next week, etc, but then it was. It may be a motivational tactic, to keep them on their toes as Mercedes before…but at worst, they have a top 3 car and a driver who can make a difference. That is underselling it…

However, if you wanted to wear rose tints, you could say the following:
The mid-high speed performance on 1 lap could be due to balance and tire issues caused by wind and cold weather which did not allow Verstappen to drive the medium speed corners as he liked in qualy. Perez was too close to Max in qualifying with the major deficit being only T1 exit which is not really the area where the big difference is expected to come. That seems like a big clue in retrospect. In the race, the 7-8 tenths margin from testing appeared again and Verstappen said the balance was amazing (while Perez was complaining about both snaps and understeer).

@ar3-gp, good post, I hadn’t thought about that but it indeed seems very likely.

Yes, it's an unusual place to gain laptime, but I've checked some live timing mini sectors during the race and Ver was gaining 3 tenths from T1 exit up to DRS line after T3 on both Lec and then Rus. So this quali advantage was seen during the race too, and consistently.

Absolutely, which is great news indeed. It means we have amazing traction and mechanical grip this year in slow-section as well.

I was comparing the first stint of 2024 car on softs to the 2023 car on softs.

These indicate a far better picture in my opinion of the actual lap time gains in race trim at least. In the first stint last year where Max pulled away without too much management -- he is doing high 37s to low 38s across his first 15 odd laps. This year his first stint was a 37.0 sharp.

RB have found 1s+ in race trim from RB19 to RB20. With better wind conditions I think we could have seen this translate over one lap as well.

Different tyres, but I think I merged the 2 charts right from 2023 and 2024 in photoshop.
