During the Bahrain Grand Prix, both Ferrari drivers encountered a number of problems, according to Carlos Sainz, who stated that he experienced similar issues to his teammate Charles Leclerc. Despite these challenges, Sainz was able to secure a podium finish.

“Yes, (during) the first stint and the beginning of the second stint. Whenever we were in traffic, we were having a lot of brake vibrations and the pedal at one point started to go long.”

“So it was always a balancing act between do I go for it and try to get rid of the dirty air and overtake people? Or do I start saving my brakes because they're going to fail or something's going to happen? I started saving by moving a bit on the straight to cool the side that it was getting hotter and the vibration started to get better.”

And then I could start to make moves and move forward. But as I said, the start wasn't great. The brakes were still a bit of a limitation for a bit. Then once everything settled, I could do my pace, do my overtakes and go for the podium.”

“I don't know the level of severity he (Charles Leclerc) had but for me it was one point pretty bad too. It's something that you cannot discover in testing because in testing you never put yourself in 10 laps consecutive behind four cars getting all the hot air from the four cars in front and the brakes never cool down. I tried not to panic.”

“I tried to put the side that was more heated and I took a different line on the straights to cool them down. At one point the pedals started to go quite long and also a lot of brake vibrations which is changes your feeling on the braking quite a lot but yeah I kept it cool managed them and as soon as I got a bit of clean air it cleared and it became a lot better but it's something that we definitely maybe need to take a bit more margin going into an extra race.”
So this brings up 2 points; Did Sainz manage a similar (or the same?) issue better than Leclerc did? And is this something we’ll have to worry about this weekend in Saudi? Later could be possible…
Doubt it will be a big problem in Saudi. It's higher speed and you only have two big braking zones. Worst case you just open up the cooling a bit more. As for Sainz, seems like he managed the issue well with some smart driving.

This comes from the same driver who refused to change his tyres in Japan last year when the team called him in, lost almost 10s and a track position because of that and then complained the team sacrificed him to protect Leclerc's P4...
I agree, I think Charles was a more significant issue, they replaced part of his brake assembly in parc fermé last week. Both drives have complained about front locking due to the new front suspension layout through testing which I think is what Carlos alluded to. Hard to know, Charles was light on details when questioned yesterday. Hopefully it is was an unfortunate install issue and not something they need to change design/ rework a part to fix.

I think there were two issues. One clearly an imbalance issue that Charles was suffering with. The other is probably a setup related issue that needs working through adapting to a new suspension creating a lock up condition on the front under braking.

I think it’s wise to avoid another Charles Vs Sainz and how they manage issues debate on here.

Be interesting to see what setup changes are made this weekend to overcome this.
Sounds like some rear suspension changes are on their way.

Will have a reduced FP1 to be 100% for FP2. https://x.com/albertfabrega/status/1765 ... CLffs_wqYQ

Hope Carlos gets better

Decent FP1 with clearly a suboptimal setup.

By the way Sky Italy reports that people in the paddock said that Leclerc's car was very close to retirement during the race.

FP1 but that last ~4 lap stint on used H by LEC looked good eyeballing it compared to VER and Rus.

edit: should add it might not be representative if they change to a lower df RW from FP2:

Sainz looks to be well enough, encouraging... Can't call this FP1, more like Free Test 1 for Ferrari, they ran easily the biggest R+BW set which is way too big when you look at the rest of the field. On its own this is not a bad choice, getting to know and understand the car is crucial early in the season, while FP1 is not run in the same conditions as Q and R of course. Even with such a setup, they were 0.9s on average faster than 23 FP1. Max had the same time as last year, for what it's worth
And they call it a stall. A STALL!

Seems like the engine is turned down, even aside from the wing maybe being too big, even with DRS the top speed is well below RBR. No big losses in corners except 22-23 where he lost a bit, and the last corner where he gained a lot.

Quick race sims at the end seemed decent although short with only 3 real laps:

LEC
LAP 18 H/11 Stint 4.0: NaT
LAP 19 H/12 Stint 4.0: 1:35.722
LAP 20 H/13 Stint 4.0: 1:34.097
LAP 21 H/14 Stint 4.0: 1:34.143
LAP 22 H/15 Stint 4.0: 1:34.086
LAP 23 H/16 Stint 4.0: 2:8.453
LAP 24 H/17 Stint 4.0: 2:19.520

VER
LAP 15 H/9 Stint 3.0: NaT
LAP 16 H/10 Stint 3.0: 1:35.282
LAP 17 H/11 Stint 3.0: 1:34.936
LAP 18 H/12 Stint 3.0: 1:34.742
LAP 19 H/13 Stint 3.0: 1:34.526
LAP 20 H/14 Stint 3.0: 1:39.964

Charles did best lap on the 3 rd fast lap on the same soft tire, but look like he use more wing, low top speed compare to Carlos

Long run looks good, deg seems to not be a problem here so hoping for a 1-2 tenth gap in race pace on the optimistic side :)
Looking at the other teams fastest laps, it seems like Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren are best in the T4-6 complex. Merc didn't look great in those corners, but let's see.
