Looking backing at the on board of lando, I don't know if it counts as a driver mistake, like a lock up would be but it looks kind of like when the car gets unsettled by wind. On the radio to his engineer after the lap he is pissed "good hey....dunno what to say we all know what it is".

Main goal is not to damage the car in the sprint race tomorrow.

Sounds like he didn't get his tyre warmed up, but I didn't see his lap.
I watched the lap - quickly. It just seems the car is unstable in the first half of the lap, lot of sliding and going wide.

I'm no expert but it didn't look good. Lando was not too talkative on the radio afterwards. I think he feels he made a mistake.
I saw the replay, he had no grip, but he's behind the wheel getting temps up so it's still his mistake.

Lando was driving like on ice.
Him after the lap: "I don't need to say anything. We all know what it was"

The team has to check that. This hasn't happened before. It wasn't Lando's or Oscar's fault. What happened wasn't normal. You can't just be 1 second slower than the mediums. It was clear the car was the fastest today and that wasn't normal.

Well, if it's not a mistake then I guess it's pretty bad temp management on that tire. Hot track on a car which fires tires relatively quickly + softs is not a good combination.

Still, that was a huge dropoff for Lando. If they needed the double warmup to bring the tire in, they should have put Lando on track from the get go ...

Car seems to be amazing though, so even if you are frustrated there is more than a silver lining.

Guess just one lap on softs in practice, makes it difficult to know what is different, with all the changes.

Perhaps with the new upgrade the focused on tyre degradation the car might not heat up the tyres that fast and might need time to bring a good time.

Both McLarens overcooked the softs in less than 1 sector, I hope they can play around with pressures for tomorrow and avoid late stint deg

It's so disappointing to end the session like this though. Car had amazing pace and it drops off massively on the softs. Not even a top 5. Hopefully it's not a hint towards a fundamental problem, because we are heading into some hot tracks in the next couple of races ...

Was that the problem? How can you overcook the tyres?
