It might have been a gamble, but the clean air is much better than sitting behind, even 2 seconds behind, so he should be able to get the tyres under control. But let's see how it goes.

Piastri is not using battery right now, we're told. He's got to manage it for a few laps.
He actually looks like he has the pace to drop the Ferraris when he is ready.

Makes sense, been stuck in a DRS train and wasting tires isn’t ideal since it would be too hard to overtake in a train and he has no pressure from behind, so he doesn’t need to be too concerned about managing the distance to Perez

It’s the issue with qualifying behind and overtaking on track being a pain. They’re creating the offset and hope that makes it more manageable. Trust boys. Race pace is bloody magical
