Cordeiro Report; Road America Schedule - VW Jetta TDI Cup

The vision of Road America grew out of the dreams of a man named Clif Tufte. Tufte's dream became a reality in April 1955 when the track was carved out of 525 acres of Wisconsin farmland. Millions of dollars in improvements have been made throughout the years, but the original 4.048-mile, 14-turn configuration has never been altered.

Join Volkswagen for round 6 of Racing Under Green, The Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup!

Race day is Saturday August 15, 2009.

VOLKSWAGEN ANNOUNCES QUALIFYING PATHS FOR 2010 JETTA TDI SEA

Post

VOLKSWAGEN ANNOUNCES QUALIFYING PATHS FOR 2010 JETTA TDI CUP SEASON

HERNDON, Va. (August 19, 2009) – The 2009 SCCA Pro Racing Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup is entering the final four races of its second season, and series organizers have begun looking ahead to the 2010 edition of the only clean diesel racing series in the United States. Today, Volkswagen of America posted an online application page for prospective drivers at http://www.vwmotorsportusa.com, adding one more path that drivers may follow in order advance to the final driver selection event that will be held in February.

The final driver selection event will be held in early February 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada and is the last step in qualifying for the factory series. During the event, candidates will undergo a comprehensive examination on the asphalt and in the classroom. After driving tests, media-readiness assessment and physical fitness examination, 25 drivers will be chosen to participate in the 2010 season. Once selected, Volkswagen provides factory maintained and prepared racecars, media support and promotions, a first class at-track hospitality area as well as ongoing driving instruction for these future racing stars in hopes of advancing their careers to the next level.

Potential driver candidates must be between the ages of 16 and 26 as of January 1, 2010 and hold a passport from the U.S., Canada or Mexico. In addition, drivers entering the series for the first time must not have competed in any professional racing series regardless of location. Applicants must be able to submit a season entry fee of $45,000 by December 11, 2009 in order to be considered for the final driver selection event. The entry fee will be fully refunded to those not chosen as a 2010 series driver. Further information on application and series rules is available at http://www.vwmotorsportusa.com.

Three paths now available for qualifying for the final driver selection event are:

• Online application – Applicants can visit http://www.volkswagenmotorsportusa.com for an online application. On the site, candidates can submit their amateur racing resumes and other details about their past experience. Series officials will then select candidates from these applications to participate in the driver selection program. All applications must be submitted along with the series entry fee by December 11, 2009.
• iRacing.com Jetta TDI Cup online racing season – In conjunction with iRacing.com Motorsport Simulations, Volkswagen has created an online racing experience unlike any other. The Jetta TDI Cup series car has joined the list of racecars offered on iRacing.com, and iRacing has launched an online version of the series. The iRacing.com Jetta TDI Cup series participants will be battling to earn their way into the 2010 final driver selection event. The top iRacing.com driver to earn a position in the 2010 series will be awarded their season entry fee and will drive the iRacing.com car.
• Karting qualifier competitions – Earlier this summer, the series began hosting standalone karting competitions at Boston’s F1 Outdoor karting facility. The top finishers from each event will move on and compete in the final driver selection event. Like the iRacing.com path, the top-rated karting qualifier driver to earn a spot in the 2010 series will receive a fully-funded ride.

About the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup
The 2009 season marks the second year of competition for the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup, which is sanctioned by SCCA Pro Racing. During the season, young, up and coming drivers (between ages 16-26) will compete in 10 events on eight road courses around North America in identical, factory-prepared clean diesel Jetta TDI’s powered by Syndiesel® B5 blended biodiesel fuel. Each driver competing in the series will earn a Pro Racing license from SCCA at the conclusion of the season. In addition to more than $50,000 in prize money at stake during the season, the series champion will win $100,000.

The Jetta TDI Cup car is powered by a 2.0-liter, 170 hp, four-cylinder TDI clean diesel engine mated to a six-speed, double-clutch, automatic DSG transmission. The car is only slightly modified from stock with Pirelli racing tires, race suspension and brake components, driver’s racing safety seat, FIA roll cage and an on-board fire extinguisher system. Series sponsors include: Pirelli, Bosch, ViON, Castrol, Oakley, Red Bull, HYPERFUELS, Aggreko, defNder, Lamin-X, Meguiar’s, Sherwin-Williams, Chicagoland VW, Safety-Kleen, Ringer Gloves, Jim Russell Racing School and Trellis Earth.

Cordeiro report; A “cheesy” weekend! Road America

Post

Cordeiro report; A “cheesy” weekend! Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, Road America

The next stop of the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup was the dairy capital of the United States, Wisconsin and more specifically Elkhart Lake, Road America.

Once again, we hit the road a day early with the camper in tow. Not so lucky as I have been, to avoid traffic. Chicago was utterly insane. Toronto to Chicago takes about 8 hours and Chicago to Road America is supposed to be just under 3 hours. This was not the case. Arriving just 15 minutes into Chicago rush hour, I paid the price of being late. It took exactly 4 hours and 24 minutes to reach the track. I was so zonked out it's not funny. Initially we planned to take the ferry across Lake Michigan, but decided we wanted to take the scenic route and check out Chi Town. Omg... 12 and a half hours, straight... too much. I wish we stuck to the original plan.

Road America is a very interesting track as it is incredibly fast with little room for error. What is my favourite corner? Canada corner (T12), of course! Canada corner is a tricky right hander uphill but before that, it is 6th gear, redline, in the Jetta TDI Cup car. Fast fun.

I found myself having difficulties with the track, particularily corners 1 & 5. In Turn 1, I always caught myself over slowing the car. The billboard I was using as a braking reference was OK, but I never let myself become comfortable with the immense grip and speed of T1. Turn 5 was also tricky. The reason T5 is tricky, at least for me in the TDI Cup car, is that the normal racing line is super bumpy. Somewhere near the inside apex is a huge dip that upsets the car and spits it out towards the gator curbing. Sometimes this dip would even cause sudden oversteer and would require throttle off or countersteer, slowing me down even more. I qualified 19th, yeah I was stressed; this was my worst qualifying of the year. I didn’t let my inexperience, tiredness from the drive over and once hot streak-turned-ice-cold bother me, too much. What was done was just that and I had to focus on more important things, the fans.

The Chicago Autobahn race was supposed to be the debut of the CORDEIRO racing shirt but alas, it was canceled due to a wardrobe malfunction. With things taken care of, we were ready to hand out the shirts during the autograph session. Wow! The place was rammed! I swear people came out of the woodwork, the Volkswagen section was crowded all kinds. It was totally awesome to interact with the fans and hear great things about the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup series. I am happy that the debut was such a success and we were able to raise awareness of Clean Diesel racing. We gave out over 200 shirts!

Race Mode. No chance to relax and catch some shuteye this time. It was a busy weekend. Crack open the fridge and read directions. RECOMMENDED USE: Drink one whole bottle for maximum energy. Do not exceed two bottles daily, consume several hours apart. I’m JACKED up now!

Red lights off, great start! Passed three cars for P16. We reach T1 and there goes Jake Thompson, spun off the track and rolled back on! Everyone swerved around him like a swarm of bees, intense! Now I am P15 and we are heading into T5. Remember that dip in T5? Two guys are fighting for a pass and get sucked out wide to the alligator curbing and now I’m P13. It is still the first lap! On a roll, AWESOME!

A few laps go by and I’ve made it down to P8. We are heading down the back straight into Canada corner. Whammo! Derek Jones and Devin Cates collide. Devin flies off the track, front digs into the sand trap and trampolines him WRONG-SIDE-UP onto the wall. OUCH! What a buzzkill. It was terrifying to watch. All the dust and that bang imitated a land mine. Double Yellow, full course caution. One lap around and we are back at T12 (Canada Corner), Devin is out of his car walking around, good sight.

After some time we went green again. Here we go again, flying into T12, I was setting up to pass for P7. The guy ahead did not seem to realize and began his early apex (Roll Eyes). Under full brakes I couldn’t add to that so I let up a bit and steered around to the outside of him, off the track I go! All I could think of was Devin! I managed to keep my foot in it and made it out of the gravel. I lost two positions, now P10.

A few laps went by and another double yellow came out. Not sure what the reason, but it wasn’t what I needed. The gap behind me now closed onto my rear bumper. Green flag with very few minutes left. Good restart but he’s stuck to me like glue. The draft is HUGE at Road America. It came down to the last corner on the last lap. He passed me on the entry to T14 and I passed him on the exit of T14. We are heading to the finish line, neck and neck! Ten seconds to go! I begin hopping up and down in my seat wishing I had a push to pass button. We crest the hill and he begins to overtake me… Nooooooooo!!!!!!!! We cross the finish line and he got me by a foot and an inch! So dramatic. Good race Ryan!

Thank You Volkswagen, Hyperfuels, ViON, Track Mart, Inside Track Racing News, HotBits, Can-Alignment and Smile Seating for helping to make the CORDEIRO shirts successful. It was great to see the fans in the stands sporting the gear and supporting Clean Diesel racing.

Cordeiro Report; “Cordeiro” TDI Cup Fan Shirts & Raffle at Mosport!

TDI Cup Guest Drivers
Volkswagen has announced its three guest drivers for this weekend’s race at Mosport International Raceway. One guest driver being Toronto’s own Jim Kenzie.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jim last weekend (Aug 22, 2009) when my Jetta TDI Cup car was at Don Valley VW. He is Canada’s foremost automotive journalist. You may recognize Jim from Toronto Star’s “Wheels” section, TSN’s “Kenzie’s Korner”, MSN Autos website and many Canadian and International outlets. I am looking forward to meeting Mr. Kenzie again but this time it will at the start line!

Image

Canadian TDI Cup Drivers
Along with the three guest drivers are my two fellow Canadian drivers from the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup, Jake Thompson and David Richert. Being the only Canadian race we are all trying to create a name for ourselves.

“CORDEIRO” TDI Cup Fan Shirts
In an effort to do so, I have created “CORDEIRO” TDI Cup Fan Shirts. They debuted during the last race at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. I cannot believe 200 shirts went in just over half an hour. It was so great seeing all the support towards the series!

End of day raffle!
Exclusive to my hometown track (Mosport) I will not only give out the “CORDEIRO” TDI Cup Fan Shirts but have an end-of-day raffle for those who wear the shirt! Great prizes are up for grabs, be sure to get a ticket stub with the shirt!

My mother always told me that if I didn't have anything nice or constructive to say, not to say anything at all.

While it may not be F1, the fellow obviously has a lot of passion for this series, and his posts are informative and well written. It is not a pure bred race car series, it is using cars that are all but the same as the showroom.

I've had the pleasure of a few laps around Mosport, and it is fun track, even when driving a TDI Jetta I'm sure.

Good luck Andrew, I figure I'd throw some positivity your way so you can see not everyone around here is a negative nilly. Everyone has to start their racing dream somewhere, and you are far closer to it than I have ever been.

this fellow is pretty obviously spamming to build a buzz around his name to pick up sponsors. He has yet to post outside of this thread or reply to anyone else.

Not trying to encourage what could really be spamming, but have you even seen any of those races? Some pretty good wheel-banging going on. I quite enjoyed them racing, even though they were quiet diesels they were good fun to watch. I only wish I could afford one of the street driven Jetta TDIs. A coworker has one and he averages about 30 in the small town we are in and right at 50 on the freeway. I'm just really hesitant to try and buy a car on just my income and the job I have doesn't exactly fill me with confidence on how long it may be around.
