That shows that we need another huge upgrade to gain the upper hand.
You know, it's not like teams actually have a button which pops out a huge upgrade and puts you on the front of the field every time you press it. With the field being so close, this regulation is nearly being "cracked" and there are no more silver bullets that propel you forward easily. So each upgrade they bring now will have smaller and smaller impact on laptime.

... Also

They just brought a huge upgrade package 3 race weekends ago. Put them from being a clear step behind the top 2, to now being consistently at the front on quite different tracks. What McLaren has done already is impressive to say the least.

The next upgrade package will come in Silverstone at the earliest, and with margins getting so small there's no guarantee you get ahead of competitors.

True but all they need to do is gain 2 tenths more compared to the rest to be unbeatable. Its a race who will probably continue to next year.

Just watching again. Russell got a tow all along the straight from Albon, without it he'd be behind Piastri.

I’m sure Red Bull, Ferrari and even now Mercedes on todays performance will be saying the same thing…..

Time for me to make a very small rant for the pole this time. What the hell do we need to do to get a clear 1-2 on pole and a clear 1-2 on a race. Everytime the conditions are good someone comes and steals it at the last minute. Who would have thought Mercedes who were nowhere two years now suddenly becoming a front running team and I have a feeling it's not just Montreal as they got a new front wing.

I agree with you that Q3 strategy cost us pole today, but it's pure hindsight. From all top teams we're the one that had be at all Q3 this season. I am happy with it.

Other thing, Gille Villeneuve is a straights + slow corners track and some time ago our car was draggy and slow at slow corners, look we're now! A papaya second row at this kind of track!

Let's go for the win tomorrow!
To do something well is so worthwhile that to die trying to do it better cannot be foolhardy. It would be a waste of life to do nothing with one's ability, for I feel that life is measured in achievement, not in years alone. ― Bruce McLaren

Hopefully they (anyone) don't become unbeatable.

In fact, Max would not have taken pole if the Merc team had prepared its drivers better, Merc would have been about 0.2 ahead of Verstappen, Russell's time in Q2 was 11.7

But then again he was on used tire which worth more than slipstream.

Q2 had different conditions, there's no point going back and comparing I'm afraid.

Of the Merc, Max and Mclaren, we also fuelled for 2 more laps whereas the others did a single fast lap at the end. Hard to say pole was ours as we'd have to fuel for 1 fast lap but also run the final lap 3 minutes earlier than most, which probably wouldn't have happened.
