Lando also getting a tow on his pole lap, so the gap between 1st and 2nd is close.
Even with Norris' tow Verstappen gained a tenth in run to T1, when usually he lost time to Norris in this area

When you consider this, the real gap is 1.5 tenths or more

In Montreal, Lando was 0.020 seconds behind the pole position. Two weeks later, Lando took pole position 0.020 seconds behind second place.

I’d love to see him win again but I have a feeling it’ll be like the last stint after the safety car in Canada. Max will get past somehow and just relentlessly edge away.
I hope I’m wrong though [-o<

RedBull is the superior car, make no mistake about it. Lando just hooked up an ungodly lap.

Track position might give him a chance to win tomorrow, if he maintains the lead after lap 1. But if deg is too severe, or RedBull purposefully sacrificed some quali pace for the race, Max is still the favorite.

Err based on what? McLaren have been faster than RB at every weekend since Miami upgrade in the view of Norris and the team. They think they were fastest at Imola but RB pipped them with a tow which gave them track position, and should've won at Canada but said that Verstappen won with the slower car. Barcelona is now a continuation of that trend

Care to provide evidence of that?
The cheapest sort of pride is national pride, every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud adopts, as a last resource, pride in the nation to which he belongs; thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.

McLaren has also improved a lot in the tire wear component. Plus Lando knows how to save tires. He has already shown it many times this year. So the forces are equal. Some small factor can intervene from the outside and decide the outcome of the race.

Max had a Tow too from Perez that gave him 5kph extra.
Lando is really putting his overrated team mate to shame, to think people Peter Windsor were saying that Oscar was the youngster and would soon start to get on top of Lando and Lando may have to move teams etc. Nonsense, Imo Lando is up there with Max Alonso, Lewis, Lecerc. I call the Fab 5.

Not to Oscar's defense. But he was good until he went into the gravel. Yes, it wouldn't have been pole, but it was still a good lap considering that Oscar hasn't felt very comfortable behind the wheel all weekend. Lando was in the top 3 in all practices and the difference to first place was always no more than 55 thousandths of a second. And Oscar was lost somewhere around 8-9 tenths of a second from the top 3 time. So overall he improved in qualifying, but he couldn't put together a lap. In terms of pure speed, he's close to Lando, but he just doesn't have enough experience yet. And for now, his main weak point is monitoring tire wear over the race distance. So far, this first qualifying, when he's been frankly poor.

They were on the back foot at Imola yet they still were the fastest car on that first stint by some margin on a setup which was only tested on FP3.

In Canada, Lando was only faster (much faster actually) than the competition in that first intermediate stint towards the end on a drying track. In any other condition, McLaren had the 3rd fastest car (2nd if you want to be generous).

And here, by Lando's own words, he was lacking 1 or 2 tenths to Max throughout qualifying on the very high speed corners and he just threw caution out of the window on his last lap to just barely pip him in the end.

Track conditions also moved towards McLaren in the end. Max had already hit the peak with his car on worse track conditions so there was no more room for him to improve when condition got better.

Let's see tomorrow. I predict a Max win, but I'll be more than happy to have the status quo shift on such a favorable track for RedBull on paper.
