Melbourne and Jeddah Alonso managed to keep the Mercedes behind (the aggressive driving he had was fine, it's also true that the car responded well). Today something like this is unthinkable
Hold Mercedes behind? Or cars in general? There is no doubt they've lost ground to Merc. But is the AMR24 faster than the AMR23? Yes. By alot.
The amr24 is probably faster even than the rb19, I mean every year the cars improve, I'm talking in proportion to the opponents. Then amr23 had better traction qualities than amr24, clearly overall the 24 is superior. However yes amr24 Bahrain in my opinion was faster than now, every race they take huge gaps from Mercedes of even 1 minute, which didn't happen at the beginning of the season (Alonso finished ahead of Russell in Arabia and also in Melbourne)
That happened when the Imola upgrades made the car slower/harder to drive. Hopefully, they've fixed that.

HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX 2023
Max: 1:38:08.634
HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX 2024
Alonso: 1:39:24.449
Both race was clean without long yellow flags or vsc,sc.
Piastri 2024:
1:38:01.989
(Norris could finish even 10s faster if wanted to)
At qualification maybe faster than rb19 but at race not even close!
You can't use race data. It's useless, too many variables, like getting caught in a DRS train, tire strategies, where you started on tge grid. In that case your pace is limited to the car infront. Plus that wears the tires vs running in free air at the front. It's huge.

If you check the 2023 Redbull lap times at race then the 2024 Adton still slower 😑

Was that they said, the hungary upgrades made the car is more precise and "confortable" and Tom McCullough said yesterday they made this with that upgrade and drives was happy about it, and some wekenesses have been fixed, now we look if is real or just words again. Spa, monza, singapore next few race and specially when the new upgrades comes, we will see if AM really understood their problem like they say.

Let's say they have the same performance as silverstone or better yet Suzuka. It seems that these updates have given the drivers slightly more confidence

Pole lap by Hamilton in Hungary in 2023 was 1:16.609, and he did a 1:15.854 this year, and Alonso a 1:17.035 in 2023, and Alonso this year did a 1:16.043.

But Lando went from a 1:16.694 in 2023 qualy to a 1:15.227, which is the kind of car development you want to see.

Talk about cars being faster a year ago is nonsense. They all improved, it's just a matter of how much relative to each other. Although of course the AMR23 with the now illegal front wing was fast at the time.

I think the front wing was already nerfed by then. I think that happened at the Spanish GP.

watching alonsos onboard from hungary. think he needs to take the initiative more on strategy. he said 3 times before his first pit stop the tyres felt fine and it was too early to stop

It is said there were two drivers disappointed with the evolution of their cars, Max and Fernando. The new floor is a bit better but it is not very noticeable. He was also very angry with his team's strategy, he would have finished P9 if it wasn't for the early stop.

Lets see how Spa goes and if we can get a little closer to Ferrari

Remember, he did it in Silverstone and it went all wrong.

Also, the early pit stop wasn't to help Alonso. It was to help the team or stroll come out ahead of Hulk. They failed cause Strolls pitstop was slow.

We'll see if Alonso's responds as you're suggesting he does. If he does, they'll struggle trying to initiate any team strategies.

The stories about Lawrence thinking about firing Lance seem to be true as there seems to be more pressure on Lance to perform.

To add what Miquel wrote for Marca (I think you mean that article) that the car still has too much understeer and doesn't rotate enough.

has the same issues as red bull. slower on entry into corners. not good at riding curbs. weak front end so compensate by adding more to the rear which makes the car unstable
