So FP3 is a washout and will be going in blind with Qualy AND the race with a old configuration. Damage limitation indeed.
The one good thing from the what was seen so far, is despite that it was raining pretty heavily when Merc went out is that Russell was still taking more normal racing lines and Lewis completed a lap after Russell boxed with both using the skinny rear wing which Bono said was looking competitive taking the conditions into account.

It's ground effect. It's just extremely hard to design for these conditions without using 100% scale and on the exact track surface.

Going back on the upgrades will probably have a positive effect for this weekend just a negative effect for the rest of the season

Yeah true with all things considered, we might have a descent qualy but the race will be dry and the pace looked quite bad with the new config. It will be a race of discovery for sure. Lewis and Russell will have there work cut out with no apparent benchmark, this is where there analysis behind the scenes is so crucial. Ultimately they don't know what kind of machine they have beneath them.

I gather the low temps are helping. Not sure what the track temps are for tomorrow though.
“And that’s part of the game, is being able to be adaptive, and we’ve got this new car – I don’t know how it’s going to handle, hopefully she’s great.”

No reason they won't go back to them after the summer once more analysis has been done.

Toto said they removed some of the upgrades because rain was coming and to establish a baseline because of the balance issues they were having and it doesn't mean the upgrades failed

Toto Wolff to Sky Germany: “Yesterday was not so good. We have tried a few new things that are very difficult to analyse, whether it was positive or not. We took some of the car down again for today, also because we knew it was raining.”

“Difficult to say where we stand with the pace. Now we are sticking to a pre-spa spec in terms of the suspensions and the underbody to establish a baseline.”

Temps should still be fine for Merc, high of 21c , mostly cloudy during the race according to accuweather, but this is spa and that can change very quickly

No doubt they will. Just the time they spend understanding them is time that the competition will develop further ahead. Thats the negative.

As they themselves have shown. Once you crack some of the code, you take a leap forward.

Nobody would have predicted what they have done in the past 5-6 races after China. The key is understanding.

George appears to be the poorest wet weather driver of the new generation of drivers. Lando is just marginally better than him. Lewis still continues to show his skill in wet weather and is on par with Max (car being the difference) and Charles. That is really something for a 40 year old driver.

Eh it's very car dependent. He isn't as good as Lewis of course, but he's shown in the Williams in 2021 he can be as quick as the fastest wet driver.

I’m doubtful over tomorrow without a session to dial in the downgraded spec. I hope they have a good Sunday car.

Well with the car having a wider setup window it's been more of a Sunday car than a quali car. Max has chosen a higher df package as well. Hence his pace in quali today. Will be interesting tomorrow.
