F1 is sending cease and desist letters to creators whose videos use F1 name

Post

Formula 1 has been keeping busy during the summer shutdown by shutting down some of your favorite content creators, who are using Formula One in their branding. By Formula One, I mean the term, ‘F1‘”.

Such content creators can no longer use the term ‘F1’ to make money off it. As such, several of them them have had to rebrand their content, to avoid having their channels and accounts being taken down.

She pointed out that the ‘cease or desist’ letters had only been sent to content creators in the US and as for herself, she mentioned that she had just finished writing a 3,000-word essay explaining the positive impact that creators have on F1’s growth. However, since F1 is conducting such a crackdown, the essay might now be redundant.

The individual then explained why this move did not make any sense. To prove her point, she used the example of the NBA – arguably the biggest basketball league in the World.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver once stated that he didn’t ask for highlights of the league’s matches to be taken down from social media because it helped with marketing. Using this example, the individual pointed out how F1 is seemingly losing out on free marketing.

100% agree they are blowing it doing crap like this. It’s like in the races they prioritize replays, and covering back markers rather than front runners so to push their subscription content. A fan can only see the sharp end if they subscribe. Its very very frustrating.
Watching F1 since 1986.

The F1 channel has come a long way, but there are so many other content creators putting out excellent content that this feels like shooting themselves in the foot.

Personally I just see it as whining from someone trying to affiliate themselves with the sport. They don't need to use copyrighted terms and materials in their names, but do hoping to do better in the search terms and such.

Various social media channels can at times help promote the sport, but on the flip side they can do so regardless of the their name for the channel(s). There was a time when no coverage at all was allowed outside of official F1 channels, and yet the sport survived just fine.

If you ask me, the content creators just want an easy leg up to make their profits larger. If they have good content they don't need that leg up, especially if it comes at a cost of using what is legally another entities trademarked or copyrighted products.

Now content creators are having to use still images in their videos instead of race footage. Even a bigger outfit like The Race is using mostly still images in their videos now. And it takes away from the quality of it. This is a Liberty own goal.

This holds true for every media ever. Those still photos are the property of the agency or photog, who pay big money to Liberty. Those images also must be purchased with language on how it’s used.

People are making a living as content creators with material they never produced, or obtained.

Even AMA motoecycle racing, it photogs take video, and try to sell it, it’s pretty much a lifetime ban.

The outrage here is just not understanding how the business of media and entertainment work, and it’s been this way forever.

Well that isn't the way Liberty were going about it 2 years ago. They literally put Josh Revell on the official F1 channel 2 years ago. While he was using F1 content and making money from it. It was a big free for all with video content. Content creators help spread the sport. And there are still legit arguments about what constitutes fair use.

Could be a one time appearance contract.

Liberty owns the rights. They are paid lots of money by other media companies to show their product. Those media companies in turn sell ads and subscriptions to pay their bills.

That’s how it works. As soon as you use their media, in an unlicensed manner, for commercial use for yourself, it’s actually against the law (US and I’m sure Europe). Put an ad on your YT video and it’s now commercialized. Whether they enforced it or not before doesn’t change that fact.
