Russel has great potential, but is still developing and improving in certain areas.

I'd expect him to be better in tire management being in the F1 for sometime now. But - he hasn't hit the ceiling yet.

Russell got too aggressive at the start. He got kicked to the back of the lead cars, had a wing change(10 seconds) and a 4 second pit stop. And still finished less than 2 seconds behind Max.

Max was running very defined engine due to an issue.

Mercedes top brass didn’t want to offer Lewis a longer contract or an ambassadorial role. That's not on Toto. Bringing Russell into the team was the right choice (it should have happened a year earlier, but again, that wasn’t Toto’s call either). Russell is a solid driver, but he’s not a generational talent. Toto knows this and is making the right move by courting Max. If Max joins in 2026, it will likely be Russell who departs, not Kimi (barring any spectacular failure on his part).

He is 120 races and 5 years into F1. I think what we see now is pretty much all there will ever be. Despite some really good things, the common theme of his limitations comes on a Sunday when it counts.

after the wins at Silverstone and the race in Belgium, I thought they would continue to improve the car, but it seems they are in trouble again after the Zandvoort and Monza races.

Isn't this a bit harsh?

Mercedes almost snatched P2 in the WCC in 2022 and ended up P2 in the WCC in 2023, with Hamilton P3 in the WDC. Mercedes have 3 race wins and several pole positions to their name in 2024. Mercedes is still a top team, and expecting the team principal to stop down after 3 decent seasons is quite ridiculous, especially after he led them to 8 straight WCCs and 7 straight WDCs.
