Who cares about poles. Charles has almost 30 of them with only 7 wins. They need to win races not qualifying.

It often gets talked about but rarely happens as it is hit and miss, but we'll see how we go. First Q3 lap, we might see it. Probably not on the last Q3 lap for Mclaren. They may give it a practise before.

If the margins are tight then a mistake on a track like this can cost a lot.
I didn't mean necessarily a sacrifice tow by one driver but just being 5-10 seconds behind someone on a hot lap.

They need to maximise their potential in both sessions to get most out of the weekend.

If the team now start saying that only the race is important then maybe I'll fetch Alonso's deck chair for the drivers on Saturday.

Also true... But overtaking here is possible... Pole would be very nice but not as critical as at other circuits...

It is, but apart from some rare situations, higher position is a benefit including pole, so ruling it out is daft. Especially when it comes.es to T1 trouble.

Qualifying is more about driver's showdown than anything else. It's impressive to see who can pull an amazing lap together and it's easier for people to be impressed by a great qualifying result. It's partly why Senna is regarded as one of the best drivers ever whereas Prost is not nearly as well known as him in spite of (in my opinion) being the more complete driver when you take race pace into consideration.

And because qualifying is about that driver's showdown, it's highly dependent on individual performance on that last lap.

Of course, you want the best position possible and if you can get it, you should aim for pole. Ferrari has arguably lost points this season because they haven't had a good car in qualifying so it definitely matters if you're starting way down.

But if you're close to pole and you're starting P2-P3, it's not the end of the world, assuming race-pace is decent.

Does pole even matter at this track with that straight?

I totally agree, pole is important but not the be all and end all, but we have to aim for it.

Naturally a 1 2 lock down would be highly profitable in the race, much more than pole alone.

Also being ahead takes you away from some the inevitable first lap squabbles and trouble

naturally you want the drivers to have less work to do tomorrow and to have as much fresh air as possible, as dirty air on a track that has little traction will hurt much mire than Monza.

Hence Q3 laps are critical and pole would be great, 1-2 the icing.

Is the argument that pole doesn't matter?

It's very close so could be anywhere in top 8. It's another track where the Mclaren is the best car, doesn't really hold up.

It's consistent though. But if Red Bull are fighting again, it does make championships hard.

Personally I'm confident the team will do the talking when it matters and deliver another 1-2.

It's time for Qualifying. Let's go and do the first part of our job by getting the 1-2. Let's go Mclaren.
