Leclerc had a very slow lap just before the inlap (49.990). Something went wrong there.

Tyres were finished

The inlap was quicker by almost a second by the time he finished S2.

Yeah, I mean it's easier to make a mistake when the tyres are struggling... Also, generally inlaps have higher engine modes

The approach was too conservative. Track position is king.

They were too focused on tyres and they forgot that overtaking is difficult even in this track. Leclerc as well too relaxed with Piastri behind thinking too much ahead.

Charles was too conservative out of the box and didn't even try to block Piastri, underestimated that he could attempt a dive bomb.

Also no need to wait for Piastri to pit, it was obvious he needed to pit then and there... had he stayed on he would lose position to Perez and put himself in a hole.

I don't think it is as simple as "just cover the inside" tbh. Charles was still on relatively cold tyres. Piastri made a great move and the McLaren loved those hards meanwhile Charles killed his rears behind Oscar.

Although as I say this, Charles said looking back he should have defended Oscar better. Fair enough then.

Hard to be overjoyed when you go into the weekend with a race winning package and come out with a total of 20 points! At least the car's fast.

Yep, people have to adapt their rules of engagement with Oscar now that he's got the taste of blood.

Leclerc said he should've defended more and he thinks the setup choice was poor for the hards and he had no pace in the 2nd stint. It was his fault not to defend more but after that one mistake there was effectively no chance of taking it. Just a massive costly error. Like he said, he'll learn.

Just so disappointed we could've had huge points today still, now one car has 0.

He didn't defend because he didn't expect Oscar to have so much grip to brake that late in the dirty part of the track, because he had very low grip out of the pits on hards.

Must be more careful next time and try to cover the inside.

With free air he could have managed things a bit better and Oscar should have pushed more to fight dirty air, but yeah he said the feeling with the hards was not great.

I don't think so. Judging by Sainz's pace, the car was plenty quick on hards. If Charles managed to hold for 4-5 more laps, he would've driven far into the distance.

I think the clean air would've helped but yeah it would've been a tight battle. Leclerc said he was scared of crashing almost every lap, so I guess he just wasn't comfortable. It's so disappointing because he was incredible on those mediums.

Since Leclerc said he didn't have good feeling in the car, I'm not sure he would've had the same pace as Sainz.

Piastri clearly had way more pace at the end than what he showed for most of the stint, he was flying in the final few laps. That McLaren is insane on low fuel, there's no chance with them unless you're 10s clear. Ferrari are close but still not quite there. I hope whatever they bring to Austin helps bridge this gap.

General question out of curiosity, would you guys consider the Perez/Sainz incident a racing one?

I still think Leclerc could have won this race easily in free air, even if the feeling was worse compared to the first stint.

Can anywone explain where that 6s gap went during the pit stops? I'm guessing the tires went off on the inlap or LEC made a mistake, but it wasn't clear on the live timing and they didn't show his pit stop.
