Yes but they pursued peak load particularly during 2024 during which time they made the issues far worse. I suspect Newey would've turned them away from this path had he been here still. Maybe they wouldn't have discovered the issue with the instability so soon or at all, but I think the car wouldn't be so uncompetitive
It is speculated that Newey was already trying to turn them away from this path over the winter and losing his power to influence the development is why he left. The Imola update toppled the whole thing over.

Singapore 2023 was the preview of the kind of behavior that this concept could produce when operating at the extremes of load and ground clearance. Judging by the performance of the VCARB on friday, it was never a suspension problem. It was aerodynamic.

IF they can turn the tires on, they will get faster tomorrow.

The driver :

Max on main concern is the grip
"Less of a problem [handling the car] to be honest, I wasn't really struggling with the bumps and kerbs, just general grip."

The 'driver coach' :

"Nothing works with Max's car. He has no grip on either the soft or the hard tyre and has no balance at all.

The driver says there is no balance issue (handling) only the total grip is poor, while driver coach says total grip is poor AND balance is off. My understanding is that the word 'balance' refers to the relative grip difference between front and rear, and doesn't mean the 'total grip available' - for example 45:45 and 50:50 are both neutrally balanced, just that the latter case has more total grip.

At the moment, I would say that the situation is very worrying. In any case, we have to try something drastic now. Let's see what we can try."

we have to try something drastic brace yourselves
I am starting to think whether Marko has some role in engg decisions, I hope not. Because over a long period of time, I have been tracking the 'tech' comments he makes about the car - all of them have been wrong, afaik.

what should scary us is that they came in Singapore claiming "we understood what's wrong, path is right, we've something to try in Singapore" and then they are again lost; not that I was expecting to be ahead of McLaren/Ferrari here, but the comments from Marko and Max today are really worrying, and not for the Singapore GP, but for the Austin correction.
which team does this remind you of ?

Max running both wings smaller and has absolutely no top speed advantage over Perez. They've been experimenting with everything clearly, I don't think there's any way Max choses mid loaded wing here unless he plans to play defence the whole race. However, that can only work if he feels confident in the car

And they call it a stall. A STALL!

Taking anything but the highest df level for this track would be silly, why even try less loaded wings at all lol.

perhaps to see whether sector3 last two left hand corners (high speed) can be taken advantage of, as the approach to them is after a mini-straight

Dont forget that track will change after sunset.
Yesterday Red Bull fall back a lot from FP1 to FP2. Hopefully they've mitigated that with setup, I'm just not sure how representative this session is.

Yesterday FP2 was the track also 37 degrees just like now. I don't think it will change much. It was cloudy not sunny FP3.

I watched the FP3 onboards on the quali sims on softs.
Norris is the only guy who is turning the car with one turn of the steering in the slow corners. There is a lot of talk of tyres and temp windows, nothing is affecting the McLaren, it's riding kerbs beautifully (looks easily the best through T16-T17 chicane - which is crucial for the pace all the way till T1) and the driver doesn't have to struggle at all to rotate the car - everyone else has to make atleast 2 stabs of the turning the wheel (Verstappen is having to yank the steering 3-4 times like crazy to get it rotatting => his throttle application at exit is massively delayed => losing buckets of time.

Severely understeering car. Top5 finish will be a mega bonus. I can see Norris winning this by 1 minute.

Wasnt that just under braking and max steering? Sure some diff settings would sort that out.
