He did, didn’t he #-o

Maybe Emag is actually Lando….
It’s not a update if it’s not a new floor =P~
Slightly different front wing flap configuration with suspension fairing changes to go with it alongside some brake duct exit changes look like a lot when you put them in a list for the upgrade sheet.

In practice though, these are minor changes that amount to very little laptime gain, perhaps even intangible. I wouldn’t be bitch*ng about the floor if they were comfortably clear over the competition. That would just be a sign of a mature car in its development cycle.

That isn’t the case though.

I didn't see anything criminal. No need to fuss. One hour of practice. Not everyone managed to get used to it, not everyone managed to find the optimal settings. Slippery fresh asphalt also doesn't give confidence and stability when entering and exiting turns.

And in general, the general configuration of the track can have an even greater impact. Perhaps the characteristics of the track are slightly better suited to other teams. The overall gaps between the cars are minimal, even taking into account Lando's mistake.

The sprint race will provide a few more answers. And the main qualifying will provide even more, when teams will have the opportunity to make changes to the set-up of their cars.

We’ll just have to see what they bring to the following races.
Houldey says there is more to come and Stella has been talking about a floor update for eternity

Have in mind guys that it's another thing to get pole today and another thing to actually win tomorrow.

Just to put things into perspective.

1. Norris did only 1 fast lap on softs in FP1. I know some others did only 1 as well but still worth to mention. Verstappen had several laps on softs as they switched to them about half session (McLaren only last 5 minutes). Norris also had some sort of a minor issue in FP1 because he was in the box with mechanics working on the car for a little while
2. Norris would be on pole without those mistakes in S3 - he was faster in SQ1 with mediums in that sector than in S3 with softs.
3. It's not ideal but at least it is the sprint. Potential loss of points will be less severe.
4. In Miami McLaren qualified P6 and P9 in sprint. In qualifying P5 and P6. Many are now saying that McLaren was fastest since Miami (how people forget).

It's not ideal start to the weekend but few things were obvious, they were not happy with the balance and made plenty of mistakes while braking/turning into the corner. Hopefully they figure out a setup direction they can apply after sprint and then come out stronger in the qualifying and the race. I am confident they have plenty of room to improve and Norris would have had pole without mistakes in S3.

It'll be interesting to see how it goes today. Drivers might not yet have confidence, car might not be set up quite right, track is not really rubbered in...

All sorts of reasons why we might be off and why the team and drivers might have done better, but also looks fairly clear that we have all sorts of reasons to improve, including in the Sprint. We aren't far off, but it sure is tight.

Evolution of each session will see relative pace open to being quite changeable.

On reflection, if anything yesterday was a bit like the races before the summer break. 4 teams with a chance of pole and the ‘mistakes’ are costing McLaren a good result. Car is still quick…. And they aren’t happy with it yet this weekend

The track is slippy and if the car is also not on point, it may be understandable if they struggle. Likewise, car might be fine and drivers struggled. Hard to tell where that balance sits, we will find out more today.

With both drivers struggling to get the car do behave, I suspect the setup and track weren't ideal for yesterday. Hopefully it will click with a more evolved track, if not, we should be fine for Q.

A lot of people will be used to what fact wont they

Just had a nosey at the telemetry between Max and Lando, interesting to see that Lando is gaining 2 tenths on Max at corner apex, then immediately loses it again after the apex. Straight line speed seems pretty much identical between the two

A bit underwhelming but looking on the onboards it seems that both the driver and the car are not properly configured for this track with upgrades that are still not properly tested. The showing so far it's a difficult pill to swallow after the dominant last couple of weekends, and we might just need to write this weekend off.

Progress can be still made sure, but other teams that are in front are in similar situation. Ferrari and Mercedes making mistakes along the way that can also be improved after the sprint. Still a guessing game for what's to come and it should be entertaining to watch regardless of the outcome.

Just watched Lando's onboard where he loses the time on the lap, and it seems to be because of a random downshift on the car whilst going round the corner. Not sure what went on with that as seems VERY strange.

Here's Lando's onboard for you guys.

Yea I saw that with Ant last night.
A warning light comes on as well- maybe an accidental downshift?

Could be, might have thrown him off checking the steering wheel because T19 wasn't great either. Missed the apex a bit and had to be careful not to run wide at the exit.

Aye, I know not all final quali laps are perfect for the drivers but Lando did seem to have more going wrong for him on that SQ3 lap than the others did.
After all he was on course to be on the front row with a car he isn’t happy with, if they can improve the set up after the glorified FP2 long run which we have to call the Sprint this weekend then laptimes for McLaren should improve for later this evening
