Re: [MVRC] Mantium Virtual Racecar Challenge 2024 (Grand Prix Cars)

Post

Here's my entry for the finale of 2024. It's been a lot of fun developing this car over the last few weeks, and I think I'm just that little bit off of the midfield pack, but the RustedGP car has drastically jumped up in performance over the last week or so. Some little issues here and there on the car that I could've fixed with more time and my inferior CAD skills cost me a lot of time fixing errors in the process. But I'm very happy with the gains and I've learned a lot about aerodynamics. :D

I ran around 45 simulations and practically every part on the car has changed since Monza. I passed the 5cl barrier in MVRCfast, so hopefully the car is even better in the official simulations.

The extra 48hrs helped a lot with some finishing touches... (and finding some loopholes...)
(BTW to LDVH, i think my latest submission (RustedGP_R5_v3) went to the backup Dropbox. The MVRC cloud only has the (RustedGP_R5_v2) because I made some late changes and V2 barely uploaded before 12UTC so I couldn't upload V3 on the cloud)

Anyways, some renders :

Looks to me as if Koldskaal was the most innovative for the final race of the year.

There must be details hiding somewhere I can't see then, Koldskaal's looks identical to the car submitted for Monza when comparing images on the website.

I'd also like to take a chance to thank you once again for running everything this year. I'm sure it takes a lot more effort than most imagine.

I'm looking forward to a new rule set and an ever increasing grid for next year!

Maybe I did not look at it close enough last race, or I forgot.
Shockwave also sports some interesting details, just mot sure if you can see them.

It does take a lot of effort, so good to hear.

I think your wishes will come true next year.

Well that's a wrap!

As expected I was carrying 10pts of drag too many to really challenge at the front. I'll be very curious to find out where I've carried that drag in comparison if G-Raph and Vari are willing to share those numbers in a end of season / end of regulations debrief.

In the next couple of days I'll be writing up a post with some images from throughout the year discussing some of the changes I made along the way.

Good job Panthera, you deserved the podium. I am happy with my fourth place. Congratulation to GRaph for the perfect season and to Variante who was the only competitor for the first place.

Smooth sailing for G-Raph.
Well done, you deserved this championship, nailing the car design right away and delivering with great consistency.

Good performance from everyone else too. Many cars are just a couple of good updates away from the top. Keep pushing.

As for me: I experienced a twofold correlation issue that cost me another 1st place. I could've predicted the CFD miscorrelation based on previous races, so my fault for not taking enough margins. But the laptime simulation miscorrelation was out of my control.

This is what I'm talking about. Plugging the numbers in for the top 5 cars outputs these laptimes:
G-Raph: 69.829s (+1.638s over the official simulation)
Variante: 69.751s (+1.381s) [unofficial victory #-o]
Panthera: 70.152s (+1.694s)
CAEdevice: 70.271s (+1.067s)
MaxTaylor: 70.453s (+1.219s)
Meaning that lower drag cars seemed privileged in the public release simulator, but higher downforce cars got the advantage in the official simulator. So, setting up a car for a racetrack is kind of a gamble.

I would not talk about possibile "correlation" comparing the Fast solver and the Standard/Long Solution setup, for me (not only this year) the Fast setup has always been unusable. I use a custom setup, nearer to the Standard setup (and non linearity is still an issue, but less important).

On the contrary, I totally agree about the laptime simulator issue. I can imagine two possible solutions:

1) A distributed application in order to not use interpolation or database for the online version
2) A full race of 3-5 laps completely simulated in AssettoCorsa : )

Congratz to G-Raph for another well deserved championship.

I did run only 3 simulations for the last race. Partly i kinda lost my motivation after the big correlation issue on Monaco and another reason for the low sim counts is this:

I was a competitor on the last 2 rounds of the Turkish Rally Championship as a co-driver. Preparing to races and working on my day job kinda consumed my will to design and run more simulations.

Great season!
Congratulations to GRaph. What a season. Five victories in a row.
While this might sound a bit boring, the fights behind him were always very interesting to see, including the constantly changing cars. I will have to see, if I can post some interesting geometries and CFD results over the next weeks, documenting the 2024 season.

Big thank you to Christian and Max, who were always great support. They do not only provide the laptime simulator and create the videos, but help on many other small things and sometimes simply remind me that it is time for a race again.
Would be cool to have them in the team next year again. But there is so much we could do to make MVRC better, so everyone is invited to help.

Also a huge thank you to our most important sponsors CAEdevice and cloudHPC.
CAEdevice always provides very nice goodies for the champ and there might be something very good waiting this year (and if it does not work out, it should next year then).
cloudHPC provided us with HPC resources in the cloud. For me it was always super comfortable to just submit everything to there and see the results later in the day. It is now time to release MFlow in a version that works with cloudHPC and is available to everyone for all simulations. And sometimes things go wrong and you need support. I can tell you the cloudHPC support was always fantastic. So, I really hope we keep both of our main sponsors on board.

Congratulations to the MVRC Champ 2024 -> GRaph!

This is also very cool. I cannot image to sit beside the guy driving a rally car.

Hi Everyone,

First of all, many thanks to everyone that make that challenge possible ! running everything, the laptime / video etc, + this excellent workflow to work with, really an amazing job.

Of course congrats to the front runners ! impressive figures.

On our (performance)side, we initially thought we could get closer to the top 8 (which actually become a top 9 with the impressive dev from Rusted GP ! congrats ) but when our first sim 10 days ago returns a -3.0 in CLa it became clear we would be far behind, so we're quite happy with our low CAD skills to reach -4.45CL (3.27 in efficiency) 22 days after we've started the CAD design.

great fun to learn aero and to practice CAD, definitely a loooott more stuff to understand in order to become competitive, as I already said we'll continue to develop this car before the rules change and if we're able to find the time, we would be more than happy to compete next year !

First of all, a huge thank you to the MVRC team for yet another slick running of the championship, and it is nice to see it growing with so many new entries that are doing very well.

I won't have much time to put into next year championship but if you need my help for anything, for example with the wording of the rules again, then let me know.

Thank you all for your kind words. I've said it before, but I'm very surprised that Variante got balance and cooling wrong once again. Not that I complain, of course, 5/5 is a nice result!

Congratulations for your strong season! I'm happy to provide any number you want for comparison, but my guess is that most of your additional drag is in your massive beamwing, and potentially a bit in your late kick diffuser.

That is so cool! And it looks like you even won some silverware to make it even more exciting!
