Doesnt all customer teams have to run the same PU mapping across the weekend though?

So making a super aggressive map for Charles last race would be out the window?
Mess with the Bull - you get the horns.

I don’t think so. Sainz has been running higher engine mappings than Leclerc since Brazil. He has been consistently faster down the straights since Brazil.

I think the rules just state that the customer teams have to be allowed to use any engine mappings that the factory team can. Back in the day customer teams weren’t allowed to use the most aggressive mappings available.

I recall a story about Grosjean getting permission from Mercedes to use a Mercedes-only engine mode in Spa 2015 and promptly ended up on the podium. I don’t know if it’s really true though.

Will be tough for Sainz to reach a podium just given the pace of McLaren and Max in race simulations. Guess we'll find out.

I hope he gets it because there is a very strong chance it will be his last considering his career path.

But more importantly he needs to bring points for the team and we hope for some luck

Honestly WCC was just a dream given how season unfolded. I wish tomorrow for a great overtaking race for Charles and podium for Sainz as a sign off.

I wouldn’t go that far but yes, would be a good way to finish the season.

Side note: In normal qualifying sessions, the end result was 14-9 Leclerc. Pace gap was at 0.01% to Leclerc. Pretty close.

For reference, it was about 0.15% Leclerc last year.

Ferrari definitely had the strongest lineup for qualifying this season.

SAI was able to get his tire into temperature during Q3 more often than LEC all year long.

LEC keeps a clean sheet on never loosing a qualifying battle to a teammate over a season since entering F1

Pretty close with Norris/Piastri.

In terms of race pace, still fairly close between the two(Sainz has greatly improved on that front over the past 2 years). Will finish the calcs next week but I think the only teammates closer will be end up being Hamilton/Russell who are essentially dead even on Sundays.

Even with Hamilton starting from worse positions and likely working harder to advance, the race pace is still there. Fred can take solace in that at least. If he can gel with the 2025 car in quali next year, I think he'll be very competitive with Leclerc. A consistent year and the WCC is in reach if the car is there.

It should be a fun race tomorrow. I hope LEC goes and mindless, there’s no point worrying for WCC since before this race, 21 points is too hard, go into this and take your risks and enjoy the race.

Piastri is definitely not as good a qualifier as Sainz is if we're looking at the qualifying head to head, pace aside. Sainz is right up there with Norris, Russell, Verstappen, and Leclerc most of the time. Moreover, he can outqualify Leclerc 1/3 of the time; Piastri only outqualified Norris a handful of times this season, and one of those was due to a yellow flag error.

The only point against Sainz is that in early 2022 he was nowhere while Leclerc was chasing wins (and Leclerc should've gotten at least 2 more than he did during that period) - but that was a long time ago and like you said, he's improved significantly since then.

As for Hamilton, I don't think any of us can predict how he'll perform. But one thing about Leclerc and Hamilton... we know they both tend to push very hard in qualifying, sometimes to their own detriment. It'll be interesting to see how much this pattern continues into next year.

I agree... though Abu Dhabi isn't an amazing track for overtaking so I don't expect Brazil levels of positions gained here.

Absolutely, even though SAI clearly lost the qualifying battle he’s gotten much better. This was a great pair of drivers performance wise.

I just wish SAI was more of a team player but he’s undoubtedly good. He has to push like there’s no tomorrow in the race, that special aggression he reserves for his team mate, nothing to lose, race your last Ferrari race Carlos.

I was thinking, if with the new PU there will be no decent increase in power, it's probably better not to change it, and pray for a royal breakthrough on the first lap, otherwise Charles will only catch up with the peloton at the end of the first lap, and it will be even harder to overtake.

Reverse strategy for Charles? Start on hards switch to mediums at nightfall?
