The track is horribly slow this weekend, track temps are just too high. It looks like my already fairly pessimistic estimate of a 0.5s improvement compared to last year was still a bit too optimistic.

@Search, do you know the tire allocation?
yep, here they are (confirmed by Pirelly as well, used my sheet to add tire age)

maybe, but not sure that really is an advantage. For Piastri and Gasly, the hard dropped 2s within 7 laps.

That's less than the soft tire though.

yeah, but last year no one used Hards in Bahrain either as deg was worse than on Mediums. No idea if Pirelli fixed that or not.

Are you remembering a different race? This was the pit strategies from last year:

The only outlier last year was Red Bull, whose cars actually didn't work on hard tires which was a season long trend.

Will Mclaren get away with M-M-H, absolutely, they have pace to spare. The others? A disadvantage I think.

right, yes, I must be mixing things up. Maybe the Soft was better than the Medium?

That sounds very Pirelli, so probably

I'm not sure the soft was good for any non-Red Bull team either. I suspect they just used it to not get jumped at the start (vs. a harder compound).

So I suspect we could see teams wanting to do M-H-M or S-H-M or M-H-H. Mclaren can do whatever they want (starting on M, as they'll overtake very quickly if they lose the start). The others will have to be more strategic.

I'm really hopeful that Mclaren can show an absolutely devastating pace on Sunday because many people have not had the opportunity to understand their true potential as it is mostly hidden in obscure sector timings or masked by safety cars. With the others nowhere in sight, Oscar and Lando will be able to drive without pressure and then you really see their speed. Everyone back in Woking and mclaren fans deserve to see what this car and its drivers are really capable of. Let's just forget about the championships and experience the sheer brutality of the MCL-39, a monster hidden in plain sight. :)

+1.

Would be great if Oscar and Lando repeat what Nico and Lewis did all those years ago and have their own race 30s in front of the field.

the problem is different, these rules with ground effect are very stupid, these cars are so difficult to set up, tires, clearance (height), it is so difficult to set up these cars, the wind and everything else also affects them, at the same time updates also do not always work according to these rules, the previous generation of 17-21 years were so cool, good bottom area, lighter, Ferrari and Mercedes engine party modes in 2018, an example of these rules is Red Bull, which lost everything after 2023, although it was constantly updated, McLaren hit the mark with the Miami updates last year, it is not a fact that one of the teams will not make the same breakthrough and get ahead of them

Primarily because Lando Norris thinks we are all very stupid and some people actually believe him.
