It's annoying when Vettel keeps on bringing up that lame KERS Button Joke.. You have a REDBULL RB5 for crying out loud! Stop making escuses.. I don't see Webber whining!

It isn't annoying for me. KERS has been a decisive factor lately, hasn't it? I don't quite see Hamilton throwing it out and relying on his superior driver skills for passing or more competitive lap times.

He's being beaten this year by the new guy and even his best skill (qually) isn't going to save him from it. I don't see any of the two RBR drivers whining. They are good sports both of them.

You know what Is funny though... Remove the KERS, worth 0.3 to 0.4 seconds on this track and equalize the Fuel... and Hamilton STILL TAKES THE POLE by 0.1 in the Handicapped Macca, over the Dominant RBR5! Amazing...

I just keep smiling when I remember how bewildered Vettel and Webber looked.. :) Just read the press conference quotes:
Q: Sebastian, what was the tyre choice like for you? Is it fairly simple?
SV: Well, I think it was pretty much the same for everyone. It is difficult to point out how much there is between the tyres. I think you could see that we also favoured the prime. Overall, back to qualifying, I think it was the maximum we could do. Just a little bit surprised by the gap in the end. You know, seven tenths in qualifying is quite a big gap. Looking at the sectors, sector two I think, there are maybe a little bit too many straight lines for us, so we don’t have the button. We do have it, but it doesn’t work.

Q: Sounds a great idea. What’s the truth?
MW: No, look, they did good job. No question about it. They are quick. I am a bit surprised by Lewis’s time, both of us are, but we did our best. As I said before it is a reflection on the second part of the championship with Brawn sitting there as well behind us. These are the guys who have been there most of the season and here we are again, ready to go tomorrow. I enjoyed quali(fying) actually. As always you want a bit more out of it, but it was a good job by the team. We want to finish on a high and we have laid the foundations for a reasonable race tomorrow.

Ok, I got it. You are working yourself up for a fifth contribution to the yingyang thread.

Don't bother. The message arrived. Lewis Hamilton is the most adorable, most talented, most awe inspiring individual you have ever seen on your television screen. It is worth dedicating the rest of your life to educating us great unwashed to appreciate the overwhelming experience of adoring him.

On topic, it appears that McLaren were still dedicating resources to the development of the MP4-24 while Ferrari has completely switched resources to the 2010 car. Unless mayhem strikes at Abu Dhabi McLaren should easily defend their 3rd place in the championship today.

Red Bull probably started the season with the best non DDD car and focussed all season on getting the DDD integrated. They ended up having the best car in very few races but having second best almost everywhere.

McLaren started with the best KERS non DDD car with a weight balance fault. By the time they had sorted their mistake and caught up on DDD they had the best over all package. It is a pitty that this is the last time the Merc KERS will shine. Potentially it could even be the end of the road for silver McLarens. So let us enjoy this race, it may mark the end of an era.

In what way is the Mclaren handicapped? It came in Abu Dhabi as favourites.

Righto, before the race begins:

Alonso, Grosjean and Nakajima are going long. Possibly doing 1 stop strategies.

Kubica, Button, Barrichello and Hamilton will stop early. Compared to the rest of the normal drivers

I think he meant it was handicapped with the weight distribution of KERS without it's benefits. So all in all it does look like the McLaren / Hamilton combination is the fastest out there, with or without KERS.

Is it THAT handicapped when its arguably the most developed car?.Yeah exactly, the Mclaren clearly has a car advantage regardless. Not trying to downplay Hamiltons efforts though, he did a mighty job to take pole with a gap.

I was more referring to smikle's comment on "over the dominant RB5" which wasn't that dominant, not in this particular track anyway.

Has anyone noticed how "closed" is the asphalt at this track? I mean, it's smooth and has no large stones. It's the most closed mixture I've seen in any circuit in the calendar (heck, in any circuit I've seen!).

Yas Marina Asphalt: where are the stones?
Image

You can ignore rain at this site and you don't need porosity in the surface for water to move out, but I wonder how they do to avoid the bitumen (the black gooey thing) from seeping out when hot.

This means, in english, that you have a large mechanical grip at this particular circuit but not an excessive tyre wear. This could explain, in part, McLaren success this weekend. I would be very worried if I were designing another car for 2010.

Sad to say goodbye to BMW, my condolencies to german fans.

Hamilton puts 0.4 on Vettel in the first and second lap. This could grow to 8 s if the trend continues.

The track is also the smoothest in terms of not having any bumps at all. Teams will be able to use an extremely low setting. I reckon that is a result of a dedicated construction of the track. It basically is reclaimed from the sea and the engineers could specify the earth mechanical side to their heart's content. On top you do not have to bother with a great deal of ice damage in the desert winter.

Vettel is catching Hamilton. Lewis making a mistake allowing Vettel to catch even more. The gap 0.9s
As I hit submit, it drops to 0.8s

nice wee overtake by Kobayashi there. Caught a tow off of Button, coming out of the pits. Button breaks later and runs wide, allowing Kobayashi to pass on the outside
