I think a manufacturer such as Mercedes-Benz would behold Formula One a little more serious than shifting partnership from McLaren to Brawn based on early season form, in turn stemming from a loophole in the rules?

But hedging their bets with one Grandee and one Garagiste, why not, who knows what 2013 rules will bring?

Plus we have new teams who will expand the driver rosta, not much being said about them. Rubens Could do what Damon Hill did and go to a newbie .... or he could stay at Brawn .. Too confusing. aargh!

that's why the system was changed some years back ....joe public can understand that the reigning champion drives car number 1 !

it's called marketing , sponsors like it , the car featured in their ad's have number 1 on them ...ask any team owner if it brings in sponsorship

you mean you can spot the car no of a car during a race ? coz i try looking for the helmet .
i understand the marketing part of it - having car no 1 in ads and all . but again majority of the people won't look at the no , or will take it for granted . Besides , i think that Brawn have sorted out their sponsorship for next year . Even if they haven't they can always say that look our car was soo good that this guy came 1 st(button or barrichello) easily besides we won the constructors championship .

so in the end i'd say no big difference . better to have a better driver than a better no.

Your wording is very ambiguous here...

McLaren and Mercedes have both been re-evaluating their relationship offtrack since the SLR and McLaren's desire to build their own cars grew in strength...and on track with Spygate and then Liegate. McLaren won't sell up so if Mercedes want to have their own team they need a new partner and Brawn fit the bill perfectly.

Mercedes have been looking at Brawn since they literally blew away the opposition in Oz'09. Any deal signed will have been signed after hours and hours of negotiations not after a falling out with McLaren at Monza (if that's what you mean)?

Of course the splinter in Nobbies generous nether regions goes back way longer than Monza 2009. The long running disagreements over road cars and share majorities must have been a bit to much to swallow any longer.

We can say with some certainty that a decision to invest in Brawn on a wider scale was not taken before the decision against breaking away with FOTA was finalised. At Monza everybody and his dog knew about the split and Merc issued very thinly veiled denials that left the door open to any kind of action including braking up the F1 partnership next season. At IAA Zetsche announced officially what everybody knew, that Merc had reached the end of the road in product policy with McLaren and that the two parties would be competitors with immediate effect. So the decision must have fallen in a time period of six weeks. Someone can perhaps express it a bit more elaborate but the substance pretty much stands.

I've also read somewhere that some Air Asia guy is associated with the Lotus F1 team . Does this mean sponsorship issues for Williams in the future

Hello to all user members of F1technical. I am a new user and this is my first post. I have been following this website for some time now, and have enjoyed reading discussions on this forum. Now that I will participate myself, I hope to post and share opinion and ideas with all others on this forum with freedom and more clarity.

Coming back to the main topic of this thread, it really surprised me on friday, when Rosberg stated he was to exit Williams F1. I remember reading somewhere before the 2009 season that he had signed a contract till end of 2010. But anyways, thinking in retrospect, I have the thought, if he had to go elsewhere, he could have done so quite some time back, I mean we all remember the McLaren-Patrick Head bickkering episode. I liked to think, the relationship was on great understanding and on firm values. It really is a little confusing.

Nico was Frank Williams' Lewis.

A different relationship, but Williams gave Nico his chance to shine, and Nico committed himself to the team as a thank you. It was all handled very well, and now that he is established, the relationship has come to it's logical conclusion. Nico is moving on to a team where he has a better chance of a championship.

I think Nico was confined by the Williams. His ability to run out and set the quickest lap of Friday practice so many times this year confirms his pace, and the cars peaky one lap pace. Even though the car was basically empty, it is still not an easy task to accomplish. Ask his team mate

With either testing or money, Williams would be able to have a chance to shine again. Without testing they can't develop the car in a traditional way, and without money they can't develop in the virtual world as well as other teams.

He will always likely have a warm seat there if he wants to ever return.

Regardless, Rubens is a good choice, as he proved he still has a lot of pace, and his experience in Ferrari and now BrHawnda isn't easily overlooked.

Tony Fernandez the guy that owns part of Lotus and owns Air Asia has ended the sponsorship deal with Williams as it was only a 1 year deal anyways.

But i think that Williams are just about to announce a new group of sponsors for the team to goin title sponsor AT&T and other sponsors Phillips and RBS (Up at the end of 2010 anyways) for the new season. Remember Hulhenberg is bringing a fair ammount in to the team with Dekra and others, and i feel that Rubens will bring allong a few of the guys that were on the Brawn at Brazil also, maybes Mapfre and the beer company. But for 2010 i expect a hole host of new sponsors to the sport and a quite a bit of sponsor shake ups as well.
