We use most of the above mentioned metods plus liquid penetrant, LPI, for surface-testing of non-ferrous castings.

We teach and certify students in NDT at our college. Here is a link: http://www.ltc.edu/curriculum/ProgramDe ... %20Diploma

Our work is more involved in the testing of process piping systems during their useable lifetime to determine current status regarding system structural integrity. Also, structural concrete and structural steel assessment during the useable lifetime, i.e. bridges, building structures, etc, is a focus of the program.

Most of these are in mid-life of their intended cycle. In my department, electrical power and controls, we teach the use of infared techniques to identify "hot spots" in electrical connections (indications of loose connections resulting in higer than prefered electrical resistance).

I am associated with a set up that has aircraft and infra red as well as other equipment proven for locating various things from the air.
Leaking underground, oil and water pipes, buried bodies and UXB's.
Bad connections and problems with both underground and pylon carried HV cable networks is another part of the operation.
It is useful that the aircraft has no rotor down wash like a helicopter and costs a tiny fraction of the cost.

I commisioned a lot of ct and normal radiograhic testing of my components during my last spell at a car manufacturer in Development stage. It was indeed quite helpful to
inspect parts in endurance testing as it was not necessary to open the assembly, but still you could clearly see when degradation and failure started and how it progressed also very useful to see if parts are actually correctly assembled without
need of dissambly -wich is of course not possible or allowed on certain parts - it also has its limits.
