iRacing in the off season.

Post

Anyone else here race in iRacing? I finally got myself a good machine and wheel and have been thrashing about the rookie car, slowly bringing up my rating.

So far, it really is hands above everything else, as far as the physics go IMO. There is definitely less cars to choose from, as opposed to say rFactor, but how well the wheel works with this game is really quite incredible.

I'm sure the subscription will keep many away, but worth it to me so far. This is like WoW for racers.

Yup. Haven't had much time on it in the last few seasons so I'm a bit behind. Workin on the B license...

Some cars definitely drive better than others. The Skip is... somethin else.

I am still working on my damn rookie license.

At first, out of ncessity, I was using an xbox 360 controller, and was getting respectable lap times, and got a podium in my 3rd race, which was the first I wasn't crashed at the first corner.

That was in the ford spec racer, but they upped that series to level 3, and I am still 2.6+ area, so I am stuck with the Solstice.

I bought a logitech momo the other day and am not nearly as successful so far, but I can tell when I master it as a controller it will be quicker.

I just bought the vette and mosport.

All about being clean, consistent, and repeatable. I'm not the fastest on raw speed, but I've won a couple on being consistent. Rookie and D-class series definitely become a race of attrition!

How to control the red mist?

I'm just trying to keep this damn Solstice on the road consistently and quickly. In practise I can turn increasingly quicker laps around Laguna Seca, and never drop a wheel.

Then I do a few a time trials, slowly crawling back my safety rating, but if you drop one wheel, you need to start your whole run again, usually 4 or 8 perfect laps, but not necessarily quickly. Just safely. Quickly comes later. When I do screw up, it's me, and there is little point in getting mad. Is there ever a point? :)

In a race, it's different. You know entering the race that any incidents in the race are recorded, and go more harshly against your record, keeping you from getting promoted at promotion time.

To get rear ended by a yahoo in the corkscrew after legitimately avoiding first lap baloney is infuriating.

Sliding towards the wall, at the bottom of the corkscrew, I got my car stopped and rejoined the track about 10 car lengths behind. After a couple of laps, I was near him, and realized I was visualizing the old pit maneuver. Next thing I know, my rhythm is gone, and I'm off, into the wall, Pontiac kablooey.

Is controlling the red mist a natural personality thing, or is it something every green race driver has to learn? When racing on my console I was in usually short sprint races, banging out a few reactionary quali-style laps to win, but that is near impossible to do for a 25 lap race.

How about a 90 lap race then? Or 3 hours maybe? Without driver changes that is. With 30 cars, a dozen of which are LMPs that are ~10s per lap faster so you never see them coming, on a small track.

- breathe slooooowly (that helps when you lose the 'feeling' of the car, distances and speed due to adrenalin)
- persuade yourself that the guys that are in a big hurry will find their trouble inevitably and you'll safely drive by.
- persuade yourself that the race will not end any time soon, so there's no point thinking about it. You have more important things to concentrate on.
- be ready to sacrifice a little time to be on the safe side in 'hairy moments', otherwise you'll lose a lot more time repairing the car eventually.

These are a few things I learned after switching my focus for F1 races to endurance racing. I often see guys that are really fast in testing that fail dramatically in races, the amount of trouble they have in a race slows them down a lot.

I am not here to advertise this sim per se, but let me tell you all, as hard core racing fans, after a few weeks of getting used to the feel and the subtleties of iRacing, going back to rFactor looks and feels like my avatar :)

If anyone decides to sign up, there is a referral program that rewards new singees and the referrers. Refer me or don't doesn't matter.

Getting your first win, which I just got last night, is an incredible feeling. I started in 8th place, and avoided some incidents and got up to 2nd place. 3rd dogged me the whole race, but started to overdrive and fall back making errors.

I thought I had second, and then when the race was over I looked at the stats and replay, and the leader had brain fade on the last lap, and crashed out, gifting me the win. I was consistently faster than him the whole race, but his lead from the start was enough to keep ahead for the 11 laps that is a rookie race at Laguna.

I will make a second post with a topic to let everyone know about this temporary deal.

Well, it's been over a month and I have been turning laps quite a bit, getting quicker, more consistent, and learning a hell of a lot about vehicle dynamics, compared to my previous level of knowledge.

Here's my stats so far, which I hear are pretty good for a rookie. My main goal is to get to whatever license level I need to drive the Lotus 49 competitively. Looks like a lot of fun.

I hope that people seeing my stats might get tempted to sign up and beat them.

Year 2009
Category Road
Starts 21
Wins 2
Top 5 11
Poles 0
Avg Start 6
Avg Finish 7
Total Laps 221
Laps Led 11
Avg Inc Per Race 8.6667
Avg Pts Per Race 38
Win %9.52
Top 5 %52.38
Laps Led %4.98

In case nobody noticed, I'm hooked and trying to suck everyone here in.

Cannot give up GPL for this mate....especially if you want a Lotus 49! Heresy I say!

If it were free then might consider it but I see this going and dying when the next big thing comes out...as is the way of the world.

I might give it a 3 month try (4 if you count the freebie). I've been getting me emails about it every so often and just happened to notice your post. Maybe I'll get on before christmas, otherwise, by the new year for sure.

Oh sorry I meant the 79. Why I blurted 49 I have no idea. That is the car that is rendered in the game.

There is no need to give up on GPL to play :)

If cost is the only consideration, I would not have tried it, and wouldn't play it, but much like WoW, subscription continually improves the game. New tracks and cars being added often enough. But for full immersion, as in punishment and reward, there is no equal. If you take out someone in a GPL race, words might ensue. I can go to the stewards, or if it is my fault, take the hit to my safety rating, as there are no AI opponents.

So the Williams FW31 is to be properly modelled, and properly simulated, at least better thatn an F1 car ever has been done before for us at home.

This to me is great news for sim racing fans. A chance to sample the real machinery, as it were.

I hope to run at Silverstone at some point when it's ready, see how long, if ever it takes to get anywhere near F1 times.

Watching what "The Aliens" can do with it will be a blast to see.

I have some work to do... I have climbed out of Rookie class, and am racing the Spec Racer Ford quit a bit more now, as well as the Solstice.

Next is the Skip Barber, then Star Mazda, then Dallara, then Lotus 79, then Williams FW31.

I have my online racing career planned better than my real life at this very moment.

I don't think my Call of Duty habit will allow enough room for iRacing.
