I haven't been back to IE since I touched firefox. You wont get burned with this fox.
If you really were 'gangsta', you wouldn't spell it 'gangster'.

And I haven't touched IE since making the switch either. Firefox FTW.

Ciro has gotten me interested in Opera, but I think FF more than satisfies my browsing requirements for the time being.

And I have Chrome portable on my thumb drive, but I've barely used it since downloading it a few months ago.

Thanks for the advice, Richard Leeds, Casper, I'll pass it on.

I'm sure we have a software "pusher" included with the "piracy controller" or whatever the name is. It only takes like three years or so to check everything. It produces a report the size of Wikipedia and then, as a bonus, the net becomes a knot (ha, ha! net, knot... hilarious), but, hey, "life is a b*tch, then you die." ;)

I'm curious, tomislav: what´s the best browser in Linux? I don't use Unix for browsing, it's only on the servers.

Wow! Thanks guys. I'm going to try Opera. I don't want to have to download several things to optimize it. So I'll leave Safari 4 and IE8 in there 'til I get it down and then dump them. Maybe I'll leave IE as a backup.

Anybody else have the flash-based problems with Opera?

Well, Ciro, I can't really answer your question because I have only tried Opera and Firefox on Linux. I have heard good words for Konqueror and Ephiphany however, I just haven't got the time or lust to try them out :)

Is Firefox multithreaded like Chrome is?

Each window in Chrome is a seperate process, and if one browser tab fails for any reason, the others do not.

Both Chrome and Safari on PC are written with WebKit, an Apple programming tech, which is the quickest around. This is what makes them the fastest of the browser that conform the actual standards of HTML, unlike IE.

The best browser would be the Chrome engine, with Safari cover flow style history (if you haven't used it you don't know what you are missing), and Firefix addon library, and some third party Active X plugin so we can start dumping IE like it deserves to be. I hope EVERYONE drops IE6 support soon.

The amount of memory that vanilla Firefox uses (or has used in the past) is staggering compared to others.

It's too bad that whatever happened with the MS antitrust suit seems to have been mooted, as I can no longer uninstall IE, as it is needed for updating windows vista and 7.

The truly bastard move is that could have been easily made as a standalone application not buried inside an IE ActiveX control.

Firefox isn't multi-threaded....yet. I think it's going into future builds, possibly 4.0.

Memory usage on firefox isn't too bad now. I've got the 3.6b5 and that's running quite well, doesn't use much memory; 88,000kb just now and it's been on for a while. It has gone as far as 300,000 but I was running several flash heavy tabs.

I'll start IE8 for a comparison.
One the same pages (for fairness) it's running at 105,000kb.

OK, I tried Opera for a couple of weeks. It would not open my email. Forty-Five minutes on the phone with Comcast only ended up with as stumped tech.

Have had Chrome for two weeks and love it. This is what I was looking for.

Thanks!

I've tried Konqueror and Firefox. Firefox works well, but flash integration is a bit of a mess. Konqueror uses a lot of systems definitions, so some pages appear with the desktop settings (colours and fonts).

Not bad! Sometimes firefox eats over 700MB, so I have to close it some 3 times a day. It seems it's an issue with installation, as I don't have any fancy extensions. Checked mozilla website and the answer isn't clear either. Not even with 3.5

Wow, 700mb is a lot  As far as I know Firefox never used more than 120mb on my computer, right now it is at 54mb with 6 open pages (system uptime 12h)

Tarzoon, try 3.6 RC2 It may help. FF 3.6 is released properly tomorrow, according to the guys n gals at Mozilla.
Your memory leakage sounds dreadful, I've not had any of those problems myself.
Have you tried the flash block add-on? What it does is it stops flash from loading and gives you the option of loading them. You can also white-list sites, like youtube, so that they load flash without having to give consent. This may help in cutting down alot of the memory use.

There's also a new Opera out. Looks a fair bit like Chrome in my view. Not sure how it runs but it may be worth a shot.

Hope this helps =)

The problem is not directly with flash. Even without opening any page with flash the footprint is massive. And honestly I don't think installing a new browser is the solution - it's just an easy way around the problem.

have a look at this:

I'm waiting for the 3.6 and maybe, maybe I'm lucky enough.

Woah! I won't patronise you with the other options, as I'm sure you've tried them. That's crazy. I can't be of any extra help, I'm out of ideas. Apologies.
