Formula One Management have today confirmed that all Formula One races this year will be broadcast in High Definition this year. While a number of major broadcasters have already confirmed provide the HD feed, many others are expected to follow shortly.

We had a thread about it some weeks ago. It confirmed that nothing will be happening 2010. The HDTV capable channels will be sending upscaled material. Some cameras will be capturing experimental HDTV like Vettels's in car camera did last year.
Formula One's fundamental ethos is about success coming to those with the most ingenious engineering and best ..............................organization, not to those with the biggest budget. (Dave Richards)
The matter is very simple: As long as broadcasters keep paying the current license prices for standard definition, there is no need for FOM to invest in HDTV/interactive content.
You are an idiot for not making HD a priority. A complete and total fool with billions. You don't understand that some people watch whatever is on TV in HD at the time. My dad is not a big NASCAR fan, but watching a race in HD on a big screen with properly matched speakers and a huge sub, is a visceral experience.
Hear that Bernie?!?!?! Probably not, but let's put it into financial terms, as you can obviously understand that.
F1 in HD will hook NEW fans. SCORES of them. Advertisers love HD. The little ads on the wing endplates and such we can't read at all, become completely legible. You can sell more ads from more sponsors for more money when the ads are readable.
Genius huh Bernie? Don't fall off your dinosaur if you read this, just keep riding it into the sunset like you have been for years.

Bloody shame. Until the broadcast standards come up to at least the level that all other major sports showcase their talents, Formula One can never be considered the pinnacle of technology. The cars may be cool, but we're watching the show on very old technology, and there is absolutely ZERO reason why this can't be made HD.
The Olympics will be on HD, so will the World Cup. But F1? (sound of air escaping a deflating balloon)
Racing should be decided on the track, not the court room.
As Dave says, you can watch Nascar in HD, but if you ve watched a race recently, can t you see also the wealth of info they get, regardless of the tv resolution ?
Real time gaps !
Creative camera placement!
Way better replays !
Furthermore, have you look at the Nascar site and the online stuff you can do during a race ? The Track pass feature ? Scanner ? pitcommand ? Raceview ?
Simply awesome..
F1.com looks like an old 8-bit cartridge playing PONG.. I feel like an idiot during the races trying to extrapolate info on the f1.com intermediate red white and green timing display.
The screen overlays of the FIA signals are stuck in 1991. A real shame.
You'd have thought F1 coverage would have improved dramatically when the production was taken in-house a few years back.. it seems to have done the opposite with each country's production team no longer there to outdo the others.
I wonder what company holds the contract with FOM/FIA for F1 coverage and how long is left on it.. surely a breathe of fresh air is needed. maybe a company that has actually heard of the internet & digital/high definition television..?

Around $30,000 per corner per track, I figure, plus broadcast trailer and such. it actually records in far higher resolutions than 16:9 HD, and needs downscaling.
The image quality is stunning. Not sure if it is a broadcast camera, movie camera or both. Haven't read enough.
Bernie wipes his dogs arse with more cash each day.
You want me to keep shopping for you Bernie? You will have to start paying me soon.....

Sometimes I really get confused when I start to ask myself questions like this. Especially when Bernie is somehow involved.
Right now, each track has their own setup, producers, etc. They produce the video feed, and we have to live with it. Almost all times the quality of presentation is excellent, intermingled with some weird cutaways at the worst time to show the local favorite.
The only way I can figure why it is done this way is to offload costs from Bernie's FOM to the locals. Instead of having an expensive crew and equipment (tailored and trained purley for F1) travelling from race to race, instead the locals provide this service. And I guess they have to adopt the standard of lowest common denominator.
At this time, I have the TV on, and they are showing the WWE wrestling. Without any doubt, this is a successful company. The circus travels from city to city, and guess what? They have their own dedicated television service. Cameras, crew, production is all controlled and part of the WWF organization. Mr McMahon knows that you have to control all aspects of the final production, and that includes delivering HD to the fans.
Make no mistake, Bernie exerts total control in his kingdom. All tracks have to meet Bernie's rigid requirements, yet this one area is left open to local control.
Maybe the label "local control" is the key to this puzzle. For instance, in Canada broadcasters are required to show a certain percentage of "Canadian content". So, having locals produce the Formula One race qualifies it as "Canadian content", and is politically convenient for all (except the fans who want HD).
Times and technology is moving at a breakneck pace, and it appears that 3D HD is looming on the horizon. The NBA is taking this seriously, and intends to show some games in 3D HD. And don't even ask about the porn industry, just rest assured that this segnmenbt of the entertainment industry is definitely going 3D HD. There's a lot of cool stuff in place, and coming in the near future.
I would sure like to see the races in HD, and wouldn't be opposed to 3d. My fear is that we the fans of Formula One won't be able to enjoy this for a very long time.
Racing should be decided on the track, not the court room.
You could not be more wrong. The fans will keep watching, but more will watch if it is in HD. What is to be gained? Ever watch HD? The difference us night and day. The reasons I listed immediately above are just scratching the surface of why HD will push the sport forward. You can't be the pinnacle of auto racing in the same broadcast format the moon landing was shot in.

Its a crying shame you can watch NASCAR in HD and not F1.
I thought there was to be a load of changes to better engage the fans when the breakaway threat was going on. Did some Team Principle not say a load of stuff about bringing fans closer to the action?
HD is one way to go but F1.com needs a serious overhaul. Even V8 Supercars has a batter service for during the races, abit it doesn't work that well sometimes but at least they have tried, after all there only a national series .
While it is true that many diehard fans will watch the races regardless of format, that will not work for new fans or people freshly exposed to this great sport.
They will tune in to watch a race, notice that the format is not HD, and switch channels. It's that simple, that is what many will do. And of all the people, Bernie should realize that by not forcing HD, there won't be as many new fans coming in, compared to the potential of HD.
I'll give you an example. About a year ago I went HD, purchased all the goodies required to have a respectable system, and have enjoyed it tremendously. But my viewing patterns have changed.. over 90% of anything I watch is HD, and I rarely scan the non-HD channels to see what's going on.
Racing should be decided on the track, not the court room.
