I thought I might construct a question around the qualifying in Spa 1994. It was a thrilling session which eventually saw the Jordan-Hart of Barichello on pole position. That had never happened before and I believe it never happened again. The race of course was won by Michael Schumacher in the Benetton-Ford V8 powered high nosed car. It was one of the most beautiful cars ever build. Michael was later disqualified because the wooden plank was more worn than it should have been.

At the moment I can't think of a way to put this question in a good way so I rather pass it on to xpensive. Lets see if he can come up with a better question.

Thanks WB, I owe you one.

Q:

What was unique with the fuel that powered that Hart V10 engine in Rubens Jordan?

Was the fuel unique because it was made from coal?

SASOL somehow extract petrol from coal.

Jordans fuel partner was South African Sasol. Sasol (South African Coal, Oil and Gas Corporation) is a South African company involved in mining, energy, chemicals and synfuels. In particular, they produce petrol and diesel profitably from coal and natural gas using Fischer-Tropsch process. Synthetic fuel from coal and gas was unique at that time in F1. They also paid the development of the Brian Hart V10 engine to Jordan's specification.

Oops, a bit late

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fischer–Tropsch_process this link seems to fail so you may use:

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fischer-Tropsch-Synthese click on English side button

The development was done from 1925 which was actually pre WWII. Germany was strategically dependent from foreign energy resources like Japan. The process was economical at oil prices above 20$/barrel. Nowadays Shell runs the biggest FT plants in Dubai in order to convert natural gas to liquid fuel. The natural gas used to be released to atmoshere which was a terrible waste and a contribution to the green house problem.

Giblet, are you going to post a question?

Edit: It looks like he is not aware that it should be his term. I will put a question then:

Image

An amateur video was shot at an F1 race showing a man retire

Image

and a car perform a complete flip in the air in front of the grand stand

Image

to land safely on all wheels

Image

and proceed over the finish line.

Name the race, the retiring driver and the driver in the flipped car.

It's the 1993 Italian GP for sure, and the flipped car is from Christian Fittipaldi.

Concerning the retiring driver... is that De Cesaris? :?

As for the questions, perhaps I have misunderstood things here, but if we are just going to pick a race from our favourite driver's career and ask when he won with what margin, this will be most un-inspiring for the rest, no?
We have had all sorts of questions, mainly from race statistics of champions. There were very few picture riddles which I appreciate, as we are not all buyers of historic books.

So the scope is pretty wide and everybody should find something to suit himself. It just makes no sense to pick something that takes a week to figure out because it is so obscure.
I guess so, why the driver in the yellow suit might just be...a famous German driving a Benetton?

Yes on 1993 Monza and Christian Fittipaldi. No on De Caesaris.

Correct, it happens to be Michael Schumacher, as many F1technicals would have easily guessed.

You can watch the amateur video here:

The retirement is at 2:45 and the flip at 6:18

The race report is on the GP.com Encyclopedia: http://www.grandprix.com/gpe/rr545.html

I think Dumrick deserves to ask the next question. Over to him. Xpensive, well done for a good assist. You don't owe me anything any more.

Damn, in the video cap of the retired driver, I could almost swear the logos on the front of the overall weren't blue and green, so I ruled out Schumi, even though it really looked like him...

Thank you. Let's do it.

On the center of the next photo, we can see a guy called Nelson and his wife (at the time) Sylvia, who are better known as parents of F1 superstar Nelson Piquet Jr. He is using his physical attributes to ask for a ride (trying to beat his wife and mechanics who are also interested in it).

Question: which is the GP and who are they asking a ride to?

Wild guess here; The 1983 South African GP, which Ricardo Patrese won in his Brabham-BMW, while teammate Nelson finished third to take the title?

Hitching a ride with Ricardo on his lap of honor perhaps?

Oh it was my turn? I thought the picture question I posted of the 801 De Tomaso that Cooper-Climax got right was my question.

I'll come up with a good one so long as I am not cue jumping again [=

That's close to the mark (year and target), but that's the wrong GP and Piquet's motivation is, as usual in him, that of mocking on Riccardo. Any better guess on the GP?
