Mclaren Mercedes MP4-25

From what I can see, they are using the whole rectangular are between the lower part of the rear wing and the 'lower diffuser' as the third deck. Effectively, everything under the 'bridgestone' logos is a diffuser. That is a whole lot more than the others, which seem to have a rounded shape around the crash structure.

I wonder if that is where they are saying that they explored the rules more than others, or a question of being able to feed this whole thing.

Seems like McLaren is showing their tricks(of which they seem to have many) a bit too early.

From scarbs twitter feed:

if you look top right it would appear there's another hole in the car.

edit: think that may be part of the slot in the top of the side pod.

I dunno.

(1) Other teams may just repeat DDgate from last year and go crying to the FIA (Re: comments along the lines of thinking outside the box and seeking rule clarifications during the McLaren car launch)

and/or

(2) There were mutterings (also at the McLaren car launch) about designing a whole new floor and aero concept for the McLaren this year. Hence it'd be unlikley (I imagine) for other teams to simply tack on yet another diffuser layer in time for the first GP without the appropriate air feeding bits. It may not be very easy to copy at all...

(disclaimer: These are probably ill informed opinions)

In this pic you can clearly see that the back arm of the lower wishbone is inside the channel.

Maybe it even helps control the airflow?

Usually it is something teams try to avoid, although I heard of usage f suspension arm as an extension of a diffuser.
Anyway, in that pic it doesn't seems it helps anything, although it also probably doesn't harm a lot.

What have Macca got to loose by showing their hand early? Nothing... They are going to benefit from testing the whole idea early, and if you ask me, the other teams probally already knew what everyone else has prior to launch. We all know how much Adrian Newey likes the bubbly ;)

you cant copy a whole car afterall...

The whole car is jsut aimed at one thing, underbody efficiency, and you cant copy the whole car to achieve the same

I don't think that diffusor is anything special. It has not vertical boundary on the upper deck so the point is really to smooth airflow exiting the engine cover and possibly side pods. A kind of fancy gurney flap more than anything else.

we'll see where the mac is early march and if anyone else has copied it.

That was the problem for the non-DDD teams last year. they needed to get the supply to the diffuser. That means designing the upstream part of the car to put the air in the right place.
