You can clearly see on that picture the split in the rear wing - a few cm above the more visible gap between the two wing elements there is a faint horizontal line that meets with two vertical lines in the centre of the wing.

I'm guessing this is the channel through which they're venting air.

Dont understand the shark fin personally. Been in F1 for a number of years now and no one has been able to do anything with it.

Do they test for cross winds in the wind tunnel?

You would have to think thats going to be a big problem for them if the wind picks up at any of the races. I mean... Look at the surface area of the thing!

Yip, looks like they're flap blowing.
Lets see how it works out for them.

I've given it some thought how they can open the slot to allow pressurised air to vent but first how to pressurize it.
I have often wondered if anyone would try achieving fuel efficiency through cutting fuel to cylinders under low load throttle conditions and recirculating this air via an EGR system. If the EGR could be bled off to pressurise a chamber you have one problem solved.
Now how to open the vent without a mechanical valve.
the wings have a tolerance for flex they have to adhere to but at speed flex is inevitable. So if you design an element to flex slightly more than the one above it you could open the gap, release the pressure and blow closely coupled air over the rear of the wing element dropping the pressure further...

Isn't the slit open at the front as well, though? Wouldn't it have to be sealed to the shark fin to be fed from there?

EDIT: As in closed off at the places where the fin does not meet the wing.

A couple of things ive noticed as well on that pic:

* Red Bull/STR style cooling vent next the drivers headrest for the electronics.
* Sharkrin slightly modified with what looks like cardboard (altho could be a reflection of something orange/red)

Oh yeah! It looks like it was the same yesterday and also occupies the same position as the carbon part on the launch car. Perhaps this modification is to test the assumptions of their rivals that the centre post is no longer required? -> By being able to remove it.

For all you airflow-through-the-shark-fin guys, now you can observe how the flow-vis behaves there.

Also, clearly visible in this pic is the hot air outlet at the end of the shark fin

Might be some kind of thermal prottection wrapping. those things that look like gaffer tape look like a larger version of the stick on thermal sensors you usually see on suspesion components put in the way of the exhaust outlet.

my theory is its thermal protection to protect the part until they know exactly how much heat that centre post is getting hit with, and the thermal sensors help them calculate that.

Similarly, the off centre "notch" in the rear wing, best seen in the post above yours actually looks like a sensor of some kind stuck on with gaffer tape or somesuch. Doesn't look much like a placing for an exit for through-flow from the shark fin from that angle.

Also, the carboard / thermal protection looking strut doesn't look removable, at least not without changing the wing. Looks to integrated when you look at it from the front.

I stand corrected.

Is it possible that the rear wing has two blown flaps on it? One at the top element with the slit and the second being the lower part of the rear wing. There is again, a small slit just above the diffuser.
