Mercedes GP MGP W01

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The jury is still out on the blue things, which seemed to be aligned like strain gauges. :-k

This W01 seems to have a very narrow waist, i don't think it could get much narrower than this. Shrink wrapped cars seem to be the order of the day.
I love this car, but also think the narrowness of the 2010 cars point to one thing: they are getting too long at 5+ meters.

I want to see them at least 1m shorter. Let the teams try to fit everything within that. This would make the cars less stable and amplify the effects of any driver mistakes. Also the airflow around the car would be more messed up, too. It drools me to think of what they would do to keep the wheelbase long while fitting in the front and rear wings.

Sorry, got a little off topic...

5 meteres? are you sure didnt know they were that long :|

At least the Renault is about 5m:
Overall length: 5050 mm (250 mm more than R29)

According to the Tech analysis article on this page :)

The W01 is quite short though at 4900 I believe. And it'll probably make the cars "fatter" if we make them shorter, no?

He and Ross Brawn were close friends during Benetton and Ferrari days, but I don`t hear anything related to Mercedes GP. Has Rory retired for good? Michael won all 7 titles in Rory designed car so knowing how superstitious he is I`m wondering if he will bring him back in F1 too :)

No, that'll be an aerial base won't it? Doubt you'll see a large twister knob out the top of the nose for adjusting any ride heights.

Crash net reported:

“At the Jerez tests the veil will continue to be lifted and a more detailed picture will emerge,” Rosberg told German newspaper Bild, before adding: “We will certainly be at the top.”

“At the first test, Ferrari did the best job of those teams in attendance,” acknowledged Haug, speaking to Auto Motor und Sport. “At the next test, and later at the first race, it may be quite a different story.”

This kind of over confident statement from Britney isn't really useful. How on earth can he predict the pecking order at the next test without a crystal ball?

I believe the above comments were made to state that next test, they intend to put up better performance numbers. Most likely, the first tests were for car shakedown, and to take data to confirm their theoretical analysis matched real-world results.

Right now is the time to discover any imbalance, and to correct it. I believe they have it under control.
Racing should be decided on the track, not the court room.

He's expressing bullish confidence in his team, we need more of that sort of fighting talk.

Its only image building PR talk, why take it so literally and personally?

The first thing on PR is you need to back up what you say. The second thing on PR is to never make a bold statement unless you are certain of backing that up.
This isnt PR, this is Nico being asked a question and answering it the way he feels necessary. Another Richard on another site(possibly you  ) Always bangs on about Mercedes PR like its all the company ever does. Well if your good your good!
If they were blowing their trumpet and they were rubbish people wouldnt buy 'em.

Mercedes GP and everyone involved in the team have kept their heads low saying we arent the strongest etc BRAWN SCHUMI AND HAUG have all uttered as much, yet Rosberg is saying somthing slightly different. again this proves its not polymic PR within Merc but just people saying what they are thinking.

This is a funny thing. I have gone back and checked the quote. It says:
"Wir werden bestimmt an der Spitze sein.“ I would translate that to: "We are bound to be at the top." It is only a nuance but it starts immediately to make more sense. It expresses conviction instead of absolute positiveness. Nico is an intelligent guy and it kind of puzzled me that he would talk the way it was reported.

I would not even read conviction into this ,but more a very strong hope based on the confidence he has build up already with the team. German language can be very vague at times.

the translation was maybe googled ?

Absolutley agree that his comments made in hope, are portrayed as "WE WILL BEAT ALLCOMERS" headlines i have had the misfortune of reading.
Ah well, at least its these journo's that exposed our sacred holier-than-though MP's.

Anyone heard what time the tests starts tommorow????
More could have been done.
