Renault R30

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Thanks for the lovely pictures. That Renault looks unbelievable and it's no real surprise that they've had an upturn in results.

Look like blowing slots along the side pod to prevent any eddies or separation.
The can use a tighter waist line without fear of having too low a pressure over the floor there which also affects the drag on the body.
For Sure!!

I'm sure it's for cooling. Many teams have something similar.

ringo's suggestion seams more reasonable to me.

I also see it as a way to substitute lack of bigger undercut below sidepods.

I'm sure it works as the part of this http://www.f1technical.net/development/290

I'm surprised nobody discusses this new double floor done by the Renault team. The talented designers could perhaps do a 3D sketch how it is done.

I dont see the 'double floor'. But there is something behind the new splitter :
(maybe a channel (or many channels exiting from the splitter and going under the floor ?)

According to the RF1.com blogspot:
This week inspection has been busy signing off all the latest freight items for China, which will get shipped this Saturday. “There’s an update to the front wing which Spencer has been checking this week,” confirms Richard. “That has involved converting all the old versions of the wing, so it’s quite a busy week. It will be rewarding to see those parts on the car when practice begins in Shanghai next Friday.
So another update to the front wing after Australia =D>

I don't there is a double floor, the Petrov floor shown here is damaged on one side. I looked at high res pics of the car and the leading edge of the floor is a single piece. The double height side that we're looking it is just a vane (see linked image), this hides the slope of the splitter (dotted line) from the step height at the rear, to the reference plane height at the front. Most teams use a vane alongside the floor in this area, as a flow straightener the stepped floor behind it...

The shape blackout sees is just the radiussing of the floor

I know that Renault have stated that they aren't developing such a system, but I think that this splitter-inlet would actually be quite a good compromise location for an F-Duct intake ... what do you guys think?

I would have thought that this would lead to quite a tricky packaging job to duct from there to the rear wing, although I guess the duct could run under the cockpit from there quite easily.

Wouldn't the air there be pretty dirty though?

It was the packaging issue that led me to think that this would be a good location : it could even be raised slightly and placed in a position similar to the "snowplough" to take advantage of the aerodynamically neutral central section of the front wing.

Given that the airflow through this area will be relatively undisturbed, I don't think it would be too dirty for the purpose : wouldn't the act of channeling the air through ducting create it's own disturbances, negating the affect of "dirty" air?

Perhaps it could double as cockpit cooling vent, going right under the seat. Need a little more speed? Just pucker up. Need a little more .. pass a little gas!

Seriously though .. maybe you could come up with some system that would allow the driver's weight to be used as an accelerometer to automatically employ/deploy any kind of aero device. That would be interesting and automatic. You could surround the seat with bladders and adjust their opening/closing with stiffeners. I could see where you could choose to do a number of aero adjustments this way .. hmmm

so squeeze your butt a little on the real hairy corners to gain some rear downforce..
what an idea.. =D> =D> =D>
