Those tires last to long....

... so with the current no refueling rules I am afraid that we will see some very boring races because there aren't much tactical options left.

On Australian GP we have seen almost all cars driving the whole race on the same set of soft tires.
Those drivers who changed tires where faster but in the end not fast enough to regain the disadvantage due to the stop and so lost their positions.

Ok this track maybe was not so hard on tires and there where rather cold conditions but anyway the soft tires should have a more significant drop after maybe 10-15laps.

They could switch to softer compounds to make pitstops more interesting, but then the cars would automatically go 2sec/lap faster.

Not necessarily.
I am sure there are many ways to pretend this.
Simplest way is to make the usable rubber layer thinner on soft tires.
On the same time you make the hard tires slightly harder compared to soft ones.

So, in otherwords go back to last years coumpounds and constructions???

The thing is, that we need to keep the tyre compounds close together, but far enough appart so that there is an automatic .7-1.2 of a second differncial between the different compounds.

The way i think this is is posible is, after reading many opinions and technical views is for the cars to be given more mechanichal grip. I think making theese cars slightly faster could be the way, thus making more aggressive drivers stop twice and more conservitive drivers may make the softer compounds last longer.

Lets test driver skill and brain power now, drivers that drive hell for leather will be at more of a disadvantage.

But this could be more of a knee jerk reaction over what was at Bahrain. One things for sure, one of the big stories of the season is gonna be Tyres.

This is what happens when there is only 1 tire manufacturer in F1. There needs to be a tire war for this not to happen.

Tires have become the main variable between cars after the refuelling ban so they should be made to ad more unpredictability as refuelling used to. Some of the most exiting races in the recent history of formula 1 have involved different cars running different strategies and the current regulations don’t promote this.



The way I would create the variability is by looking closer at the gap between the hard and soft compound. The gap should work out so that running the whole race on softs plus two pit stops would be about the same as running the whole race on the hard tyre. The soft should degrade rapidly before a third of the race distance, rendering it useless, while the hard begin to degrade slowly in the last quarter of the race. This would promote cars on softs chasing down slower cars on the hard tyre at the end of the race.

Along with controlling the compound gap, what if there was no way of distinguishing between the hard and soft compound (removal of the green stripe)? This would lead to allot of second guessing with no way of other teams knowing what another was running, leading to many different cars on different strategies.

With no way of distinguish between the two, coupled with a removal of the two tyre and qualifying tyre ruler would lead to allot of second guessing throughout the race and encourage different strategies from the drivers.

I think we have seen another prove during the race in Barcelona.
Fastest lap was set on lap 59 with very old but still good tires.
The only one who changed tires was Rosberg but still unable to make significant more pace than the others.

I suspect that tyres are worked harder when a vehicle is operating in traffic. If that is so, then more marginal tyres are likely just to increase the advantage of leading a race.

this year I almost do not hear of tire graining? Is it gone?
