Renault R30

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I doubt it is such a secret, it certailny will change in couple of races :) Please share with us
RH1300S,

The whole reason he told you was so you would share it with us. He realy wants you to share that info so he can bask in his good work! Don't forget to tell us the aero balance on the car too .. :D

yeap. Downforce is measured in "points." There's another thread discussing points of downforce around the forums

I see, so they are not awarding points for downforce then?
Can someone give a definition of this measuring device?

I agree - I doubt it's a massive secret. Ask Robert K - he'll tell you. It just seems wrong to abuse their hospitality by giving out data.

Don't they reckon that one point of downforce is worth roughly one tenth per lap.....if anyone can figure out how much Renault has improved by you have your answer.

The main thing to share was the subtlety of detail that goes into the car - I'm sure we all realise how refined these cars are, but when you see live examples you realise just how intense the design process is.....the days of a Gordon Murray doing it virtually single-handed a certainly gone. This isn't so much the conceptual stuff, but the understanding and integration with the manufacturing process to optimise the parts.

I cannot agree with points of DF directly relating to lap time.
Far to many variables involved.
There should be a measurement of DF in force measurement, not an arbitry 'points' thing that is simply another sop to aero.

It's exactly like a coefficient. Dimensionless. (Well I think!)

So therefore it makes very much possible and easier which is why it used across all the teams.

Well more downforce (if drag etc remains the same) would mean better laptimes, but not necessarily linear. a point of downforce is 0.000048*(speed in kph)^2 kg of downforce Or so it is said

Across all the teams?

What is this a conspiracy?
I thought this was a top technical site, so why this undefined cr--?
It is a sop to aero that is all.

They can measure it in sausages for all I care - at the end of the day it only matters to the guys running the car.

Maybe we should say that Renault added 30 sausages of downforce for this weeknd's GP. Then we could all agree to move on...........

Yes that keeps the aero explanations nicely obscure so as to baffle the fans and prevent any reductions in DF from the regulations.
Do carry on. :|

I'd struggle to baffle anyone - I have trouble tying my own shoe-laces :?

My point is that F1 Teams often state that they have gained (lost sometimes?) 'x' points of downforce. It's a term commonly used. Also, I can't imagine why we can be sure the unit of measure is the same for every team.

Re: Renault R30

If there was a way to measure DF there would be.
This would be fairly easy to set up with the FIA.
Of course, it would then allow a direct accurate reference to DF levels that would allow for sensible regulation.

Sorry do go on with the thread topic.
