Yet, in the highest downforce era of F1, the ground effects era, was highest percentage of passing in the history of F1.

Do you have, or does someone else have statistics on the rate of overtaking since the beginning of Formula 1? I'd be very interested to see some of those..

Also worthy of note is 2009-now..passing is on a sharp rise....

It didnt drop like a rock at all! It actually INCREASED directly afer banning of ground effects (83), then steadily dropped to a minimum over a period of 13 years

You can't attribute that drop to the banning of ground effects. What you see there (between 84 and 96) is ther period when aerodynamics really started to be understood and developed unfortunately to the detriment of overtaking.

Also, a lot of other things changed between 84 and 96 which would affect overtaking, its not as simple as attributing it all to aerodynamics.

I think the increase this year is largley down to the strange races we've had, and of course Lewis Hamilton!

well if u do the math....
-good car and a bad car is about 1.5seconds difference per lap
-assuming that most of it came from the corners thats 1 tenth per corner
-assuming that that 1 tenth came from braking mostly, since its where overtaking is at its best and a average speed of 200km/hr, thats 5.5 metres later you can brake, so thats about the length of a car, if u factor in dirty offline, and following a car out of corner exits and the different line you need to take in order to overtake a car its not surprising that it is very very hard.

now if you look at cars today with top 12 seperated by 1.5 seconds in qualifying and lined up by its speed during the race, its no wonder that its so hard

I don't understand why this debate is started again every second week.

• Everybody and his dog knows what is needed (except those in denial).
• wings are needed to make downforce independent of curbs and bumps and provide front downforce
• wings have the support of the teams and Bernie for advertising and that will not change
• excessive downforce (>1.25 tons) saps energy, power and exceeds the physical limits of the drivers. Hence it should be banned

Have the honesty to say that at the least you don't agree with some counter arguments. You certainly didn't prove anything.
