Re: Is Bernie really that smart - awaiting 3D HDTV?

Post

Complete waste of time.
Modern young people cant tell the difference between proper sound and the rubbish that comes from cheap mp3 players and i pod thingies with their tiney little speakers. They sure as hell do not have the first clue about image definition.

It shows up the whole worlds present appriciation of art, music and beauty. It barely exists anymore, not unless the greed thing is involved.

There is no interest in the media to educate the public on these issues, the interest is purely what they can con the public with.
Best sound is high bit rate .wav best image is uncompressed .avi. The rest is pure BS.

I fear you're missing the point I am trying to make my friend. My point is simply that FM sounds better than AM (not including AM stereo but I digress) and HD looks better than SD. By a country mile.

Are you referring to 3D tv as a complete waste of time? I agree. Until 3d means I can walk around a 3d sphere of what is happening, I have no interest in adding depth to a broadcast.

HDTV sure isn't a waste for me, I can tell the difference, and prefer to watch most things in HD. News for example I could care less, or the standard sitcom. If there is detail to be seen or heard, I desire to see and hear it.

For the record, I enjoy FLAC for my music and my MP3's need to be 320 for me to enjoy them fully or to remix them. I enjoy vinyl as well.

Is that not almost virtual reality then if you can walk around what you're watching?

The only place I have seen 3D TV is the pub next door to me. It is a bit of a dive going by the outside and I can imagine the drinkers that are there all day being a bit disturbed by a football or a car coming out at them after 26 pints of heavy and a few whiskey chasers!

But 3D TV is too far off as HD TV has really only just started. I can see what Autogyro is saying (for once, will wonders never cease!). Most younger people want the fancy whizzo prang toys. It is (too) common to see some 18 year old on a bus with a fancy phone, playing some noise at full blast that sounds like Alvin and the Chipmonks on acid played at twice the speed it should be played at.

It's all about toys that you can show off and the look at me factor in some areas. Sadly, Aberdeen is one of them (oil money!).

Giblet wrote:Something Bernie should understand, which surprises me actually, is that smaller ads can be read and seen in HD. Trackside advertising exposure and advertising on the vehicles can be seen when the car is 4 times smaller on the screen. You can see the word "Red Bull" on HD long before the words come into focus on a standard definition set.

This would increase value for sponsors, potentially bringing more companies to the sport. I would be mroe hesitant to sponsor a 6 inch 1 foot by advert on a car in SD, but in HD at least I know the average 30+ inch HD set can see it all the time.
I think this is a very valid point. F1 is a programme which relies heavily on good transmission of details.

I just saw the first game of the world cup in HD. I a lowish quality TV, and still, absolutely amazing. I could see the texture of the grass, I could see individual people in the far away grandstand, and tell if they were wearing a hat or not, while perfectly following the action and reading every player's number. It was actually more detailed than being in the grandstand, at least for the far away action. I then changed to a normal channel, for the same game, and it felt blurred and out of focus.
Bring on HD. NOW!

3d cameras were tested this weekend although that will not be along for some time.

HD will not be in F1 until at least 2012:

For those of us who actually have invested for some time Bernie's penny pinching gets more annoying by the year. The FIFA world cup and Olympics are indeed good examples of big events getting it right.

Bernie has a buisness blind spot in both new boradcast forms and the Internet. He is confuesd by the ammount of options and the ammount of things he can do.

Take live timing for example, most people have access to good enough internet connections now that can handle the timing screens that the teams and drivers have avalable to them. Bernie can simply switch that on for the fans, but he cannot as he thinks there will be something to gain by waiting. Sometimes people can wait, but if you wait too long youre gonna look stupid.

He dosnt know what to do with Mobile Phones, HDTV, Internet Streams, downloadable content and not to mention formats. I think he is in a comfort zone with screwing the tracks for $27million a year for a race, where he could make more money from the fans from Formula1.com. He could then reduce the price of a race, get more races on the shedule and make F1 more accessable.

I think he is ready to hand over to a successor soon, by soon i mean in 2013, and the successor i think is gonna be Gerrard Lopez of GenII the owners of the Renault team, by then Renault i think will be in a posistion to buy back their shares in the team, and carry on with what Lopez started, leaving Lopez to take over as the F1 rights holder and take F1 into the new era, about 5-8 years late, and about 2-3 years after potential maturity.

?? What do you mean to say here??

Live timing that you can get by internet isn't fundamentally different to the timing information the teams get. They simply have some more information which they pay for, like GPS data, in car sensory data, in car TV and audio streams and more analysis and storage of data. I think that FOM is actually doing a pretty good job with free live timing for the enthusiasts.

Re internet marketing of the TV signal he simply thinks that internet streams should be controlled by the same broadcasters that do the terrestrial and satellite broadcasts. Bernie obviously does not want to break the exclusivity of territorial rights deals. One organization will have the exclusive rights to FTA or PTV distribution for one territory at a time. It sucks for fans but it probably is the best way of making money with F1. So do not expect that to change at all.

Basically what hes saying is he wont do it for free, when fans are ready to pay for pay per view HD F1 he will do it...Bernie never does anything out of the kindness of his heart. Yes it stinks but there isnt much we can do other than wait for retirement or death :P

He knows millions will watch no matter how badly they are treated, and he takes advantage of that fact...Smart business man yet, champion of the fans definitely not.

Bernie Ecclestone boosted the hopes of F1's global television audience on Sunday by indicating the sport will be broadcast in high definition next year.

Earlier in 2010, despite the FOTA fan survey showing that 70 per cent of fans wanted HD broadcasts, F1 chief executive Ecclestone said 2011 was "too soon" for the introduction of the newer technology.

"I think we'll be moving to high definition probably next year," he told BBC pundit Eddie Jordan in Singapore on Sunday.

It is believed this year's on-track action is being filmed in HD, although that feed is not yet offered to broadcasters.

Many sports have been broadcast in HD for years.
