Garage / pits layouts

Post

Hi there!
For my A2 Graphics coursework, I'm planning to do an architectural model of a new pit / paddock complex, so am trying to do some basic research.

Does anyone know the rough dimensions of the garages? I suppose the width of the pit lane might be useful aswell!

Any other useful and interesting information would be much appreciated!

Thanks!!!

Have you tried the FIA site? There may be some guidelines (or even regulations) posted about such things.

A good starter for 10 would be google earth. Search for the Melbourne circuit and use the distance tool to measure the length of the pit buildings then go onto the street view, count the number of garages and divide. You'll be able to get the pit lane width using the distance tool also.

I've used the distance tool for "back of a cig packet" sizes before and you can be pretty accurate.

If you assume that a typical F1 car is 1.8m wide you can scale from this photo.

Hope this helps and please post the finished product or a link to it once it is complete.

All garrages are diffrent sizes, all pit lanes are diffrent sizes.

Monaco is the smallest length wize with the smallest garrages, but has one of the larger widths.
Valencia is the smallest from garrage to wall.
The longest pit lane is Abu Dhabi now, it was Fuji, but is nuw Yas Island.

If you take your width of the pit land from garrage to wall as 6-8 meters, and make each garrage "unit" (each team gets 3 units from the start of 2010, the FIA get 3 as well and Cosworth currently take the vacant 3 untill the 13th team comes allong next year) as 4-7 metres wide, youll be fine. Height of the garrage can be adjusted to suit archechurally, length of the pit lane is designed arround the ammount of pit units there are.

But check the FIA web site, search it for "Track Regulations" and that should be able to direct you futher for the finer things.

So there's a street view for the Melbourne circuit? Good find

OK, not to be outdone by ESP, I've found the detailed planning drawings for the 2001 plan to build new F1 pits at Silverstone.

http://publicaccess.aylesburyvaledc.gov ... 0101445APP

If the link doesn't work, then go to http://publicaccess.aylesburyvaledc.gov ... lications/ and search for application 01/01445/APP

The plans are a 38Mb file on a slow connection. I've had one timeout already. Will keep trying.

Edit - Forget Silverstone, the downloads are timing out! See below for Donnington details

I did a quick search for Donington but couldn't find anything but I'm sure if I looked further, the planning drawings will be somewhere on-line.

This area of the FIA site may also help; http://www.fia.com/en-GB/sport/regulati ... cuits.aspx

I forgot to say that if you take the garrage door width as 3-4 metres per pit unit as well if you go on something older, most modren pits have a pretty big (4+ metre door) and open pit door to see more of whats in the garrage from a fans point of view.

Donnington planning application documents are here

Forget Silverstone, the downloads are timing out!.... Donnington has small file sizes helpfully labelled "Pit Building...."! 8)

So to answer the OP... Each garage in the Donnington pits was going to be 6.8m wide, 17.375 long.

Another factoid - Donnington application was submitted by Tilke, Silverstone by HOK Sport
