Great pics! First real look at the new package.

Interesting that the asymmetrical rear is still present where the old exhaust outlets used to be. The left opening now has gills over it while the right one seems to be blocked off completely. Can't see much about where the new openings are though..

Is it legal to swap the exhaust outlet from high to low depending on whether the throttle is off or on?

No, no exhaust geometry changes allowed.

Somebody quoted the rule, that you are only allowed single exhaust per bank.

loving the back end of that car.

How are they able to get away with the gills where the old exhaust used to be?

It is simple, these holes are there if the exhaust causes problems to simply switch to new ones, IF they rn it in the race this will be fully covered(or it has to do something with side view allowing these gills)

but they are only on one side.

I think they are part of the design. With the way Mclaren run there cool, its is likely they need that hole.

I'm also inclined to think that it's being used as a cooling outlet.

Parts of the rear diffuser look like they are painted light grey. Is this so the engineers are able to visually monitor the heat being applied to it perhaps?
Yer.

Pretty good guess. If anyone knows how to use paint for analysis, it's McLaren. :D
