trouble for mclaren TWO ENGINES.

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

A suspected electrical failure halted Raikkonen in Bahrain
With Kimi Raikkonen believed to be in technical trouble, his McLaren team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya may be demoted ten places on the Bahrain grid after a glitch was found on his Mercedes V8.

Some reports from the Sakhir circuit, however, suggest that 26-year-old Raikkonen's problem could be isolated to the electrics, with a new engine not definitely necessary.

The necessity of Montoya's change, too, has also not been confirmed.

Your right on with the story.
They will make what ever excuse they can. It will be the transmission, electrical, steering wheel, gas pedal, rear view mirror, etc. Everything but that Mercedez sled in the back of that awsome machine.

Yeah, because 99% of people watching F1 or reading news don't know who makes gearboxes so no harm done to any manufacturer

It's not stupid question

Gearboxes are usualy made by:

1. gearbox specialists (companies that specialize in making transmissions)

2. engine manufacturers

3. some teams have made their own gearboxes (usually in cooperation with some gearbox specialist or with engine manufacturer or both).

Finally there is 4th option when engine manufacturer orders transmission from gearbox specialist and/or makes it together with gearbox specialist.

gearbox specialists: Hewland, Weismann, ZF…

...

Too many "gearbox specialists" for one post

That I know of,
Williams makes there own box, I read that last year. It was a case where they did not want to share the gearbox technology with BMW because they were leaving, Honda also makes there own box, and Ferrari.
I am not sure of the other teams.

This was what i found on Mclaren's website:

Driveshafts: McLaren

Does this imply that the rest of the gearbox is also made by Mclaren...

The problem on Montoya's engine would be a problem with the revs. Montoya would have said that if he has the same revs as Kimi, he drives 7km/h slower than Kimi's car altough they have same aero kit!
Nobody at McLaren knows what's wrong with all these engines according to JPM.

7 km/h is too much difference between two cars with identical setup. JPM is fatter than Kimi but cars weight the same as weight is adjusted with balast. Also, if the revs are identical and gearboxes and aero setup too than it is even more strange.
