During the broadcast I was watching The commentators were saying that Mercedes was fastest in the speed trap (which doesn't mean that McLaren weren't 7kph's faster than Ferrari, and the RB's) which may or may not make up for other areas that McLaren may be slower! I do expect a good race from them but not a dominating one.

Mercedes were fastest, but I don't really see them as contenders for this race.

What have Mercedes done, to go from one of the slowest, to one of the quickest in the space of a couple of months(straight line speed here guys).
I cannot see any discernable changes.

I asked a Minardi engineer how they topped the speed trap standings when they were so slow over a lap.

"Easy to go fast when you have no downforce..." was the reply.

Thanks for the link and yes Mercedes simply reduced some rear wing according top the commentator on the transmission I watched!
McLaren need to take advantage of that speed in quali because being 2% faster on the straights may not be enough to overtake the Bulls or Fred unless they make a mistake. IMHO

Well, of course it isn't. Over a lap the RBR/Ferrari might be quicker and they will be able to build a gap and stay in front. But on the first lap they have the huge straights. If the Macs/Renaults/Meredes can jump them it will be very hard for them to overtake.

So first lap is akin to a drag race, don't you think?

Not just that, But a straighline speed advantage doesnt vary. Its constant, lap in lap out. I would still have the Red Bull mind!

I don't think it's a huge issue. Take Monza for instance, Button managed to stay ahead of the Ferrari's after the first chicane despite giving away quite alot in terms of top speed.

I think this track has bigger overtaking opportunities on the first lap than Monza, plus Alonso was battling with Massa in the first corner, so he didn't get a great exit.

But then again, i might be wrong.

This page suggests it will. I saw another broadcast that said there is a 60% chance of showers.
It could go either way. My gut says that it will be dry.
So that means it will probably rain

BBC also predicts rain. We've been speculating about a wet race for the last 2 grand prix, but it has always managed to stay dry.
