Mercedes GP MGP W01

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

@Marcush

I keep reading reports of the W01 not being able to fully use the soft tyre, is this just team BS or is there somthing to this?

I have always beheld MS is the first and so far only complete GP drive. Ronnie Peterson had the shear speed and pretty much nothing else, James Hunt had both speed and charm but didn't care much what he was driving as long as it was a fast one. Senna had both speed as well as political talent, Stewart and Prost were the calculating ones, working with the team.

But MS pushed that envelope, he took part in the development of car and team like nobody else before him.

Perhaps both me and seg are misjudging the situation entirely, what if MS and RB are cocking up something sinister for 2011?

We had this discussion about the Car (system) maybe having a lack of absolute stiffness and this could be a reason why it just is not able to exploit certain grip levels available with the softest tyres when new...this would perfectly explain why you are there when lower grip levels are present(harder tyre, green track) and it would also explain why your performance is especially affected with
low fuel -because the high fuel situation in the race will reduce the grip levels available to all competitors ,overriding any minor deficiencies you might have on low fuel levels-
so if they have found a ways to increase the rigidity of the car for chassis no5 this would explain why Schu is now on a par with Rosberg at least in Q trim

As for the MS /RB cooking up something for 2011 theme...I´m amazed how quickly everyone was prepared to write off this pair on grounds of current achievements and finding all explanations just why their achievements of the past were NOT that special.
In my book success does rarely come by chance.Repeated ,sustained success NEVER comes by chance and those who have it actually know or at least have a gut feeling ,just because they have been in situations when everything clicked into place so they know what to aim for.
I had fears that maybe MS was no more as sharp as he was at times this year ,but maybe even that was just a factor of him getting back into it getting things adjusted as he needs them and directing the forces into his ways...can anyone explain just why he now is matching Rosberg all of a sudden? It almost seems like he held back on purpose to build him up..

There is no such thing as backtracking in the world of engineering, that's for politicians only JET.

- I still believe that RB is a street-smart, not very technical, sob with plenty of political connections.
- I still belive that MS has seen his best of days in terms of sheer speed.
- I still believe that Daimler, as well as Honda, were taken for a very xpensive ride, while NH is an utter idiot.

But most of all, I believe that I will have one helluva time at Hocken next year!

If we cannot stick to the car itself, this thread will be closed soon.

I also wish to warn you guys that there will be no such situation in threads of next year's cars. Financial issues of a team will either have their own thread, or none, but posts away from the car performance and technical developments themselves will simply be removed from car threads as of next year.

As me and JET is two of a kind these days, I humbly concur.

i´m german as you know so I´m a bit nitpicky there and want to point out that I did at least try to refer to the car and develeopment before drifting away..

but tomba has a point there..even though it is a bitter fact that we have lost those areas where we can just drift away a bit ..you know life is not that serious all the time..

Good idea. The Mercedes thread became a dead end but it should be opened for next season. People have some Nomex suit eating to do.

And others have a lot of backtracking to do.

Such as Renault beating Mercedes....

So to conclude then, The Mercedes W01. A decent car, but one that had intrinsic flaws the team tried all year to surmount. Towards the end, it started looking a decent racer. Not a bad effort from Mercedes, but 4th best is not where they want to be. Far from this being a disaster, I see 2011 being more positive for them.

the flow of their development do go to a positive direction, well i can say more to MS direction looking he's performance in the last 3 races at least on qualifying. So I do hope 2011 will reflect their potential as a title contender.

btw, how about the Ross Brawn rumor stepping down from the Tim Principal position. Any more hindsight about that? or is it already confirmed?

I have been reading this thread for a while. And the technical side of F1 and MGP is really interesting.

I have also been reading at this place if you guys want to spread your wings a little, its also MERC fan based site:
http://www.f1network.net/boards/list/s169.htm

I think this link is to forum.

I think all the car threads should be closed now, not that anyone ever talked about the cars or the technical updates anyway. Maybe 2011 will be more successful for the guys at F1technical.com

I have to agree. When I first started reading these pages it was because I loved the technical insights and the lack of the usual "forum characters"...but it seems those types of people have found their way here.

I hope the comment by one of the moderators I read the other day about any non-car posts will be deleted from the 2011 car threads holds true.

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️
