BMW m10/m12 turbo specs please

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

BMW m10/m12 turbo specs please

Hi can some one tell what turbo or size was used on the m10/12 f1 bmw motor? I think they started with a kkk turbo but then went on to garret. Does anyone have the size of the turbo and the psi/bar they were running on that please. Thanks mates

they used worn m10 blocks straight four cylinder which had been used in production cars for example the e30 316i etc. and they used to produce 1500bhp around that mark in quali trim, the turbos ran at around 80 psi correct me if im wrong

I heard this before.

Crazy how a USED production lump can be pushing out that sort of power. There must have been some serious amount of fireworks put into that block to do that...

80psi? Thats incredible :o

I have an article on this engine somewhere but I can't find it for now. I think it might have been in a Racecar engineering mgazine from last year if you want to search yourself.

All I do remember was that the wives tale about them using old worn production units for the race engine was false.

They did use 'used' blocks, but they weren't getting high mileage ones and peeing on them on purpose like the legend states. The blocks were urinated on, but it was not a planned thing. They just happened to be stored out back the shop where people relieved themselves sometimes.

I have that same article Tim, and it was either Racecar Engineering or Racetech magazine, can't remember and all my mags are in storage right now.

It was quite amazing to see the actual production motor and the race engine side by side. They looked remarkably similar.

Just keep in mind there are limits to how much boost you can use.

Folklore tells us M10 engine blocks were also reportedly weathered in the rain and urinated on by mechanics prior to becoming 1500 HP banshees.

2.5 Bar that is. 80 psi is about 5.5 Bar.

the BMW turbo application was based on the architecture of the BMW M12/7 Formula 2 ..and the F1 turbo had the M12/13 index.
/DRM(today DTM) engine so it shared the outward appearance of this exceptionally sucessful engine .
The front timing cover was a magnesium casting ....maybe the dry sump as well.In 2l specification it had some 305 to 320 Hp if it was a works specification .
Heidegger and later frick amongst others did buy the hardware from BMW and supplied complete engines to customers as well.
Schnitzer made their own heads originally and they did experiment a lot with turbos with this engine in DRM ,as did BMW works team with the 320 in Grp5 and it was the experience with these that led to the go ahead for the F1 engine.

BMW had a 2l M10 (2-valve ) turbo in series production already in the early 70s..

The BMW M10 engine forms the base of this all.The M12 designation is the 4valve version -which is only Motorsports
Interesting sideline:engines developed by BMW -Motorsport usually carry the S-designation .(So the later E30 engine is called S14

The M12 even if it is a pure motorsports engine still has a M-Designation..and it is a clear indication of the way things started to get a separate entity with Motorsport GmbH.
