Ferrari 150° Italia

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

My the old one had a lot more undercut. This one DOES look like the Silverstone-spec Lotus. The sidepods of the new F150 look a LOT like the McLaren -25 too.

Wasn't that McLaren? Ferrari stuck with a bib stay I believe.
You might be right. I can't be sure.

Have to say that I too thought, hmmm, those flat-topped and not very undercut sidepods look a lot like last year's Lotus!

Strange to see a driver like Alonso sit so high:

He always likes to sit as low as posible, I think Ferrari are fooling the other teams by saying they have the KERS under the fuel tank, when in reality they may have it under driver seat, or if that it's not because of KERS, they may well have an aero trick there in the splitter, we will see next week if the drivers still sit so high...

IIRC Ferrari's 2009 car had it's KERS batteries deployed beneath the driver's seat. I seem to remember Kimi had a burnt bum on at least one occasion.

Perhaps Fred is sitting high because the car is set up to allow either driver's seat to be fitted for the first test?

From memory, McLaren had trouble with Jenson's seat during the first test last season in much the same way.

Thanks for the reply. I'm no Ferrari fanatic (example: see my signature). Is Luca ruthless? Probably. Ask Hulkenburg or Liuzzi or especially Scott Speed how kind F1 is to underperformers. I don't think many would vote Ron Dennis, for example, any humanitarian awards.

You're right -- IMHO -- other team bosses (except the gentleman at Red Bull) aren't quite so brash in public, but then part of Luca's job is to gain press attention, and brash always sells, humble doesn't. You have hit on that yourself "putting on a front for the media." Luca does a job that has some unpleasant aspects, but, like him or loath him, he does his job very well, IMHO.

I thought the seating was strange so high too. Love his new helmet design though

That is one ugly F1 car but I suspect we will see a lot of teams following a similar design with the duck bill platypus style nose.

As for Alonso sitting higher, I gather it is a system aimed at recovering the energy from Alonso's constant hand waving and converting it to the energy recovered by KERS thus giving a boost and saving fuel.

Seriously, though the higher seeting position is apparently the one that works best for the aero package for the car (that's what I've read anyway). It'll be interesting to see if any other team has thought of a similar design. It's interesting to note that Ferrari havn't followed the concept of pull rods on the read suspenion which would give a lower centre of gravity and improved air flow to the diffuser.

Few pictures I've found. Apologise for any duplication of previously posted pictures.

It's a mess is what it is. No class at all. Just a gawdy mess of colours and instantly forgettable but each to their own.

Wow! This thread has developed so much from so little -- even a prediction on the F150's performance already -- not a top 3 car!

We do know that this is NOT the car that Ferrari will actually race. And we do know that Ferrari can develop its car quite effectively during the season.

I can't wait for the real testing to begin. I think the F150 will be competitive and that this will be a very good season.

One thing's for certain though. It only looks alright from the side, and looks terrible from the front, or any angle nearing the front.

Ferrari's been using Toyota's wind tunnel? I was under the impression they had more than one; do any of the teams?

We go through this on this board every year. The teams say that there'll be major changes by the first race, but most of the time there's just minor tweaks (from a visual perspective anyway).

So the front wing will be updated as that's clearly the 2010 front wing, but otherwise there's likely to be only minor tweaks here and there and possibly a change to the exhaust (if what the team says is correct).

Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.
