Sauber and Force India were fast this time last year as well. I wish MB would show us a sign of some speed though. It's wrenching to watch really.

Team Lotus Responded to those who were amazed to their slow lap times that : it's very early days - not pushing yet and we did a lot on heavy tanks so no worries!

At the moment Trulli is les than 2 sec from Schumacher, who is fastest of the day so far :)

Più che la graduatoria dei tempi è importante analizzare i long run effettuati dai piloti questa mattina. Vi riporto una mia analisi sulle prestazioni viste in pista. E’ un analisi che non tiene conto del quantitativo di benzina a bordo su ogni macchina in quanto non abbiamo nessun dato che ce lo può far capire o intuire.

Schumacher durante la mattina ha effettuato principalmente due long run riportanti i seguenti tempi:

Il pilota tedesco riesce ad essere velocissimo nei primi giri però poi accusa un decadimento notevole dei pneumatici . I tempi dai primi passaggi a quelli finali del long run si alzano di ben 4 secondi

Anche Felipe Massa ha messo a segno due significativi long run anche se leggermente più corti rispetto al pilota Mercedes. Ecco i riscontri cronometrici:

Il pilota della Ferrari, a differenza di Schumacher riesce a girare molto costante segno che la Ferrari sembra essere oltre a veloce anche molto gentile sulle gomme. Felipe Massa ha messo a segno il migliore long run della mattinata

Per quanto riguarda la Red Bull, con l’australiano Mark Webber, ci sono stati 2 particolari simulazioni di long run non lunghissimi però pur sempre da considerare. Ecco i tempi:

Anche la Red Bull è molto costante nei tempi ma la media del long run è molto più alta rispetto a quella di Felipe Massa. Qui diventa molto importante il livello di carburante al giro che su questo tracciato incide di 3 decimi ogni 10 kg di benzina in più a bordo.

Schumacher's run, in which he did the fastest lap of the test so far, wasn't a low fuel one: 20.3, 21.3, 22.0, 22.6, 22.9, 23.8, 24.2, 24.2, 24.1, 24.6.

But it took a lot of laps for his times to stabilise and when they did he was around one second slower than where the Red Bull was yesterday, and where Massa is on his current run.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

Looks like Super Softs are only good for a qualy lap, at least for MGP...

You don't necessarily have to go fast to test. Sometimes they just specify a target for you, and you have to drive that lap time because they're correlating their simulation tools to the real world. Not to mention iron out reliability, and measure loads to make sure the thing doesn't fall apart. This way teams can make use of wind tunnels and CFD to greater effect in a car's development. The targets teams specify are just like in the video game. Conservative and calculated estimates of the car's performance, only in the real world they're a bit more "precise" and the driver actually has to drive close to the targets. So even if a driver has a 1:17 lap in him, the targets are 1:22 etc, and the driver has to pace himself doing certain specified maneuvers in certain parts of a lap. He will push at certain parts and not others, he will break soon in some parts on purpose and later in different laps.

Time like anything else is a variable, when you control that variable (or rather heavily influence it like in this case), it gives the people analyzing the data something concrete to work with. Granted I'm sure the engineers give them liberty here or there to put the stamp down, people become uncontrolled variables when emotions are involved after all. Perhaps that is what draws F1 drivers to rallying, it is the lack of constraint, to just push the car to the limit, and yourself along with it. It's just you vs the clock, it's more simple, raw, tactile however you want to see it. F1 to me seems the starkest of comparisons with it's mega budget corporate image, and complete control by authority. Concordantly, one can't help think of the phrase "speed is nothing without control", without control, your car crashes and almost ends your career. Without control teams cheat, and tantrums get thrown, without control you can't nail the apex of that decreasing radius turn your approaching at 320kph. As with anything in life, the key is to find the right balance of pushing, and restraint.

Anyone that knows about going fast knows it isn't just the nerve to go fast, it's also having the nerve to doubt yourself and slow down. Your experience can work around physics if you have the talent; sadly, you can't work around getting that part about experience, it's relatively essential.

I'd state it a lot stronger than that, "you can't properly test if you go fast".

Any constructive, reliable, testing program requires minimization of variables, you want to systematically quantify and cross-correlate the effect of your applied changes.

If a driver is going full-bananas, fighting to hang onto to the edge of a corner exit, then any subtle changes you are making to the car are swamped by the noise generated by the car running at the ragged edge of its grip envelope.

Back everything off to 90%, have the driver drive taxi-driver style, one elbow out the cockpit, nice and easy, then you can now begin to test, to begin to properly figure out what actually happens when you change wings or springs.

    IS the line thru the words RENAULT just the location where the parrafin wax+dye has been added, or a flow feature formed by the separation when the wing was in low drag position??
