Gran Turismo 5

Post

Hi everyone!
I didn´t find any topic about this game, and I think probably many of us are regular players. :)
So, what do you think about the game?

I'm a big fan since GT2, and personally, I believe that this could be the best racing game ever.
It´s great drive around Nordschleife!! =D>

It COULD have been the best racing game ever, but I don't think Polyphony really finished it. The driving physics are brilliant (if you're not using a wheel, get one!), and the graphics for the most part are also amazing, but there are many little things wrong with it. Most of the cars are recycled from GT4 and look poor, some of the original GT tracks like Midfield Raceway are gone, the shadows and spray/smoke effects look absolutely awful, you can't change brakes or gear ratios, you have to grind for credits and experience points, etc etc. I imagine alot of these problems wouldn't be present if Polyphony spent another 6 months beta-testing the game, but I'm guessing Sony lost patience with them and forced a pre-Christmas release. The result: GT5 only scored an 84 on Metacritic, and loads of people are complaining about the game.

Personally I'm enjoying it. The damage modeling isn't great but I don't care much about that. The AI likes to punt you and they sometimes brake in strange places but they can give you a good race. And the B-Spec mode isn't that bad either. The licenses and special events are great challenges, too. People are complaining about grinding, but I'm at level 18, and I intend on golding all the special events and licenses so I won't have to grind until levels 26/27. Its a very good game, but it could have and should have been better.

Let's take the GT5 discussion away from the McLaren MP4-12C thread, before the mods do it.

User error?
Unlikely. I gave it another try and it's an absolute Koeniggsegggsegseg in disguise. That McLaren understeers like a pig under brakes and when you get on the throttle... nothing happens, and then the turbo kicks in and spits you out into a spin.

I've been given GT5 for a test drive (I don't own any consoles myself), and so far the most fun I've had was taking various cars around Norschleife. The settings are: default tires, all aids off, ABS on (1 I think), "traction loss" or something(?) - realistic (that's the setting above the damage). Tools are the same I use for rFactor: Logitech G25, Playseat Evolution seat, 32" TV.
Also I try to take it easy, avoid taking huge risks, excessive curb hopping (which is unrealistically easy and forgiving in GT5) and don't spend too much time polishing a perfect lap, just try to post a clean-ish one.

So I tried setting a Norschleife hotlap in a McLaren again, failed again, and already feel like I need a shower. The fastest road car I lapped was the Ford GT at 7:23.590 and it was very easy to drive. Zonda R doesn't count, it's a whole minute faster and it's not a road car.
I've just set a lap in the 458 Italia at 7:24.824 and it was a piece of cake to drive. Simply perfect.
SLS AMG - 7:30.9, easy to drive but nose heavy, still faster than 430 Scuderia and 599!
Belatti wrote:Try again, the car is one of the more docile of the "big beasts". Strangely i found things i didnt expected, like lotus elise, that should be a pleasure to drive, as an oversteering crap
Now I'll have a 3rd try. I expect MP4-12C to do around 7:25, I hope I won't need medical attention by the time I get a clean lap out of it

PS: Elise has no LSD. Lift off = spin. So the key is to go flat out all the time and it'll understeer all the way

EDIT: I think I learned how to drive the MP4-12C. It's hard work though. Here's the lap chart (unfortunately only top 10 are displayed in this manner). MP4-12C feels archaic compared to any car on this list, not just 458. The only advantage is how it pulls in high gears.
Image
After making the shot I've added the Nissan GT-R. 7:29.328 !!!.
Now that's an impressive result, considering how easy it is to drive.

Update: having done some laps in a McLaren F1 I'm now absolutely sure PD have cocked up with MP4-12C in a bad way. The old 'F1' is not only massively faster but easier to drive too, which I find very hard to believe given that the new McLaren was developed to be a user-friendly supercar for 'daily use' or so they say.

Also I'm pretty sure Ferrari Enzo wasn't done properly either, it has less grip even than F430 let alone 458. It's only able to keep up thanks to low weight and a very potent engine. Handling wise it's similar to MP4-12C with a bit less understeer and with smoother power delivery. But it slides way too much for a car with such a stance and aero.

I've not experience with GT4 (3-2-1) but judging from the youtube videos it's an arcade game with massively fast grippy cars (GT cars drive like LMP1s etc). In GT5 many cars come close to delivering a very sim-like experience (albeit somewhat more forgiving).

First of all I must say I dont own a PS3, I never will and I have played a friends house just a bunch of hours. So my inputs are based in that short experience, using PS controls, not steering wheels.

Regarding "B"spec mode I totally hate it. The players you create are morons no matter that level they have. You have to nurse them all the time unless they have a big car advantge. The most annoying thing is when you have long races and you have sit and watch a boring race you dont want to, but have to.

I dont like and think its ridiculous the money you need to buy some cars. I would never play that much...

Regarding the MP4-12C (using PS controls) its a gorgeous drive. I agree the Enzo should be betterand that the 458 is googd, too.

I've not driven the 12C much, well apart from the Grand Valley endurance race, but I was really tired and can't remember much.

But from the little I remember, it's very forgiving, like the SLR. Considering it doesn't have a massive rear wing and elaborate front winglets and front splitter dragging along the floor, it has plenty of downforce.

I always feel I'm relying on mechanical grip more on the Mclaren F1 at medium speeds, but the 12C has that and more downforce.

What tyres are you guys using on your timed laps of The Ring? And are you using the standard gear ratios?

I used default tires, setup and all the parts that came with the car. No modifications whatsoever.

Default as in sport hard? I use sport soft and got 1.27.something at the ring with the 12C. Just bought a bunch of supercars and changed oil and bought sport soft for them all. No mods. I'll post the times I get tonight soon.

I guess. It may be different for different cars, I think. Slower cars don't have sport tires but 'road' or 'street' or something like that.

Revival! I just got the game, and have some questions.

Has anyone found that with game updates, the handing of some cars has improved? By improved, I mean become more accurate. Because people above were mentioning that certain cars handle better than others, when clearly in real life they would not.

Also, where do I adjust brake balance? I can't find it, and it is really frustrating me. EDIT: found it! oh my god! it makes such a difference, it makes the F40 actually drivable! YAY!! :D

I am playing the game with a DS3 controller, with all aids off (except for driving line.. does that count?) and I am attempting to get gold in ALL challenges, licences and races, I am at level 16 now, and have decided this might be too difficult. (Top gear lotus elise challenge anyone? oh man....)

I wonder if anyone know if it is actually possible to do it? Or is one of the two (steering wheel or full driver aids) pretty much essential to achieving this?

EDIT: Where is the photo/travel mode? I cannot find it...
EDIT AGAIN: found it, its actually quite fun using the photo mode. and if anyone is interested, there is a really good write up on how to use all the functions on the camera, very clear an comprehensive, with example photos demonstrating differences:

Hey everyone, new to the forums. Im also a member across at gtplanet and would be great to add some GT5 players to my friends list. If anyone here is a bit of a GT fan then you can add me PSN ID Evoloution. There is currently the GT Academy running with a great prize on offer for the winner and is certainly worth a look. Im using a Logitech G27 wheel and I will be using the forums here to gather info for my next sim rig and replacement wheel for the G27.
