found on f1zone.net:

Cars at Montmelo (Circuit de Catalunya):

1. Ferrari - The car looks very good on track and produces very consistent laps

2. Red Bull - Not as impressive as expected - unsettled through turns 2-3. Last stint of race simulation on sunday MW sandbagged- braking 30 meters early into turn one.

3. Toro Rosso - This car was a surprise ; looked very good both in the fast corners and the slow ones.

4 Williams - Looks very good in the fast corners and seems to have excellent traction.

5 Renault - Looks good but sometimes inconsistent in the fast corners (especially through the kink into back straight).

6 McLaren - Do not look good either in the fast or the slow corners - very unsettled rear through turns 2-3.

7 Sauber + FI - Looked OK.

9 Mercedes - Do not look good - rosbergs fast one on sunday probably with qualy mapping-engine sounded very different.

10 Lotus - Looked OK- close to midfield this year?

11 Virgin - Car looked very unsettled and difficult to handle.

12 HRT - On track it did not look terrible compared to the others - but 2010 car probably with DDD.
Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

How does a qualy mapped engine work when revs are limited to 18k?
They were trying different mappings to see what got the best out of their exhaust blown diffuser.

fact is Mercedes have the second fastest time of the test, and Schumacher showed vast improvements in the teams long runs with a consistent 16 lap stint that Auto Motor und Sport are saying was as good as anything produced by teams other than Ferrari or Red bull.
More could have been done.

+1 the last day Schu had some very nice consistent long runs. Much much better.

Maybe we should start charting how fast the tires degrade on each car. The car that degrades the tires the least or has the slowest degrade rate, may end up as the car in front at the checker. Having the fastest one lap, may not not mean anything anymore.IMHO

I read from TS that Red Bull is easiest on its tyres.

Evident, speedsense.

Wow, watching the times of the race simulation (thanks, Blackout) I find incredible how those tyres degrade. No gains from fuel usage, but an almost constant increase in lap times.

Image

Notice how when tyres are changed (lap 60, I assume) the difference is 2 seconds (because of the fuel load being less) between the start of the data in lap 41 and lap 61 (lap time goes from 1:30 to 1:28). This means that fuel usage gives you 1 tenth of a second per lap (you have gained 2 seconds in 20 laps), but you are actually losing around 2 tenths or a bit more per lap, watching the "slope" of the points, always increasing in time (5 seconds in the second stint of 20 laps, 4.5 seconds in the first one). So, degrading of tyres is roughly 0.3 seconds per lap (in this simulation, in this circuit, in this car, with this driver).

That, or I am reading in this graph things that doesn't exist. Anyway, I would start to forget about late braking or late apex this year, if I were driving...

"Smooth" Schumacher has a chance... I would have never, ever, figured out that the guy could pull this one! Didn't Pirelli suited the tyre to his "style"? I guess mods will be busy this year, btw, if all I read in this graph becomes true. How will Alonso manage the "problem" he seems to have? Again, I might be reading too much, but that's what you pay me for... ;)

Wow! That might mean a return to different strategies rather than the current "follow my leader" when everyone pits together.

Ciro,

That graph looks like there is a quadratic or exponential drop off in performance. One they go off, they really go off (lap 53, 76)

Sounds to me like the achieve the desired 2 pit-stops per race outcome then! 8)
