Team Lotus T128 Renault

Perhaps this is more suitable for a "Team Lotus 2011" thread under General chat, but since one doesn't yet exist, I really hope that Team Lotus does well this year.

They really do seem to have that old fashioned "little team punching above it's weight" feel about them, and their car looks beautiful.

I only wish they would re-register their team in the country where their facility is based and probably the bulk of their engineering talent comes from, but alas, I guess money talks!

What's the point of having the pillar connect to the wing that way? If they wanted to have the wing that far up, why not make the pillars extend forward or something?

there is a picture in the 2011 car comparison thread that shows a side on view of all the cars.

in this it clearly shows that RBR leading edge of their front wing is lower than the trailing, which to me explains that there are elements of flexibility to be had with the mounting of the front wing to the pillars.

In the same photo, IMO that the team lotus is the only other team exhibiting a similar flex mechanism in their FW, so this mounting could be further exploration on the idea

Maybe they are experimenting with a pivot point, but they could be trying to reduce interference drag at the front wing stay intersections.

When you have two surfaces intersecting, especially at perpendicular or acute angles (as in the wing stay) the boundary layers flowing over each surface will interfere with each other and introducing vortexing that induces early separation of flow on both surfaces.

Image

If there is a large fillet between the surfaces, this effect can be reduced. The boundary layers are then never forced to interact with each other at a single discrete intersection, but can act more like one continuous layer (remaining tangent to itself through the fillet radius).

Image

Problem is, the FIA regs restrict the intersection fillet to 10mm in that area. Perhaps that's not gentle enough of a transition for any worthwhile gains, and require something more like this:

So if they move the stays and wing away from each other, they can at least reduce the length of the intersecting surfaces. They're not even bothering with fillets in this case:

Image

Looking at this year's crop, it seems like everyone's abandoned fillets and either shortened the stay's chord, or eliminated full intersections between the stay & wing by moving them way back like Lotus, FI and Ferrari. Some '09 cars for reference:

Anyone saw this waterpiping on the Lotus T128? ..two wiggings couplings in a straight or almost straight pipe ...hm.. I think I would have placed one of them after the 90° bend close to the cylinderhead instead of this layout ...this is not going to work methinks.

Where's the Lotus-car at? Do you think we can see them in the points giving positions regularly this year? Maybe that's too much to ask for, but I'd love to see them getting some points this year.

Im giving them the abilty to score points, but not regularly, id recon every 3/4 races you could see them take a point or two. Id recon P8 to P10 is where they will be at, more P10s than P9 or P8s, id recon somewhere in the region of 7-12 points will be their target and they will be happy to take that out of the season.

Nothing specific, just a good view of some internals. And what a mess at the end of the monocoque, usually it's a bit tidier.

Are you referring to something in particular? Engine cover opening?
