F1 2011 Mobile Application

Post

Hi All,

Saw a tweet from Formula1.com which announced that the 2011 mobile phone application was now available (for Blackberry, Iphone and Android, no Windows Mobile yet) so I downloaded it.

Trouble is, on my Blackberry Torch, I get as far as the logon page where it asks for username and password, but there is no way of entering anything. Pressing keys on the built-in keyboard doesn't do anything, and no on-screen keyboard appears (normally happens when the keyboard slider is closed).

Has anyone else tried it yet?

I bought it on 2009, for $15 cdn assuming it would update each year. 2010 when I realized I bought a 2009 app for 4 races at the end of the year and could only get the demo for 2010 I was rather choked to say the least.

I'll just be logging into formula1.com and centering it on the screen this year if I am away from the TV.

@42, are you able to use the touch screen to copy and paste your name in there to get around the bug?

I don't really know the torch.

The free 2011F1 timing app works on my iPad. Obviously a completely different platform so not much use for you!

Has anyone tried the £20 version? http://www.softpauer.com/f1site/index.php?q=node/62

Ouch, that sounds painful.

AFAIK, the mobile application (I hate hearing people say the word "APP" it sounds so coarse!) has been free to use and download since at least the start of 2010, and I thought it was free before that too actually, but of course it needs data to work, so depending upon your tariff, you might have to pay for that. Approximately 8MB per race weekend according to F1.

As for copy/paste, the Torch isn't too handy with copy/cut/paste, give me a good old Windows Mobile 6.5 any day and I'd be happier! It does handle email well though, provided you've gone for the full Blackberry Enterprise option rather than the Blackberry Internet one which is essentially a conventional IMAP connection which checks for new messages every 15 minutes.

But thanks for the suggestion Giblet. I have emailed F1 support, so we will see if they can sort this one out prior to FP1, or I, Like you will be getting my laptop out for Quali, and I am really looking forward to F1 in HD on the Beeb this year!

Man this seems like a long off-season?!?

Get Richard with his I-Pad!

Seriously though, I expect that would be pretty cool on an iPad, better than the teeny screen of a phone, and more convenient than a laptop. Perhaps THIS is the real purpose for an iPad (I had been wondering if there was one!)?

As for the paid version, the beeb were offering the "driver tracker" element of that for free last year (within the UK of course!), but I don't know if they'll be doing the same this year? McLaren also had a similar feature on their website but only showing their cars. Other than that, I don't quite see why the paid version is any better than the freebie one?

Glad to hear it's working for you though.

Cheers

Taht free download was a trial version for one or two races only, then it expired. It worked out that I downloaded when I was in Montreal so the once I used it was very useful.

Sad as it may seam but i have my pc linked to my 60" tv with over lapping tabs. One on live timing. One of the driver tracker on the bbc website. and the other the live coverage on the BBC website. its no much more to watch as you can build a better picture of the race. I've got to the point where i watch the race through the live timing rarther than the live feed. Cant wait for 3D coverage although only just having HD it'll be along time waiting

I have an LG Android phone and decided to download the app. I found to that when i tried to log in on my phone nothing came up in the log in box when i tried to enter my details(same prob as the OP). I found if i tilted my phone to landscape, a qwerty keyboard comes up (as apposed to normal keypad) and it let me input my log in details that way. I know this probably wont help you, but if there is any other way for you to input characters then i would suggest trying that.

Bit of an update on this one. A revised version of the BB app was released last week which now DOES allow logon (it was mentioned in the release notes too). I suspect that the same might be true for other platforms if they had the problem to start with?

Thanks all!
